Robert Lewandowski has officially joined Barcelona from Bayern Munich, and the Poland international has now ascended to the level of his nemesis Lionel Messi.
Recently, Lewandowski and Messi competed for the highest individual football awards. The Argentine superstar defeated the Poland international to earn his record-breaking seventh Ballon d'Or title as he received the 2021 award, and the Poland striker was named FIFA Best Men's Player in January.
Numerous football greats expressed their displeasure with the Ballon d'Or selection, saying that Lewandowski, who set numerous scoring records for Bayern Munich in the Champions League and the Bundesliga, had been treated unfairly. Despite the football season is over, the awards, which the striker had been a strong favorite to win in 2020, were controversially canceled because of Covid.
"Perhaps the Ballon d'Or is better positioned in the prestigious ranking, but I'm happy of the respect I gained by winning The Best since I know how hard I worked for many years," said the winner.
Messi received 613 votes in the Ballon d'Or voting, while Lewandowski received 580. The Argentine did not list Lewandowski as one of his top three picks for the best player, according to German media outlet Bild, which indicated this was done for an ulterior motive by Messi, who considered Lewandowski as his biggest opponent and intended to deny him of points.
When Messi chose Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Real Madrid's Karim Benzema as the top three players, they wrote "Shame on you, Messi." Lewandowski, who did cast a vote for Messi, has now disclosed that the latter promised to cast that vote for him, but it never materialized.
Lewandowski and Messi have recently battled for the top individual prizes in football. The Poland marksman was crowned 2021 FIFA Best Men's Player in January after the Argentine superstar edged out the Poland international to win his record-breaking seventh Ballon d'Or title as he landed the 2021 accolade.
Robert Lewandowski ’s transfer from Bayern Munich to Barcelona was confirmed on Saturday in what will go down as one of the landmark deals of the summer window.
The sensational deal first came to light earlier this year when reports emerged that Barca were willing to offer Lewandowski the “Lionel Messi role” at the Camp Nou. That would mean that the Polish striker would be afforded the status and economic benefits at the club that Messi had previously enjoyed, prior to his high-profile exit to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.
