left-hander Chris Sale exited his start against the New York Yankees on Sunday in the first inning after he was struck on the left hand by a line drive off ' bat.

The Red Sox announced that Sale suffered a left fifth finger fracture, according to masslife Chris.

 

 

Hicks stung the ball at over 106 mph. As Sale walked off the field, he made a throat-slash gesture toward Boston's dugout, indicating the serious nature of the injury

 

 

The 33-year-old was making just his second start of the season after missing time with a stress fracture in his rib.

Sale has battled injuries over the past few seasons. He underwent Tommy John surgery before the 2020 campaign and has thrown just 48 1/3 innings since 2019.

"It's par for the course," Sale said postgame, according to to a reporter Think about it. Think about my timeline. It has just been shit after shit after shit. Just more shit to deal with."

However, Sale remains optimistic he'll be able to return to the Red Sox this season.

"Yeah, absolutely. It's a broken bone, Shit, I was there in spring training. Four-to-six weeks, start getting active again, moving around a little (bit), and then we'll see from there
