Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a member of parliament for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) representing Assin Central, has claimed that all 15 of the party's regional chairmen who publicly endorsed John Boadu have been shamed.
"They've all felt humiliated. All of the chairmen would step down if it were found someplace, he said.
The unconventional MP advised the 15 regional chairmen to take heed in a chat with media at the Accra Sports Stadium following Justin Kodua Frimpong's appointment as the NPP's general secretary.
"If you stab your party members there in the dark, you cannot make them alter their thoughts," said the party chairman. That's the choice we've made, he said.
The National Delegates Conference of the NPP was conducted under the banner of "Holding Together, Working Together."
The incumbent general secretary, Mr. Boadu, who was expected to be re-elected, received 2,524 votes, but his primary rival, Mr. Frimpong, won with 2,837. Iddrisu Musah received 104 votes, followed by Frederick Opare-Ansah with 50, and Ramseyer Agyemang-Prempeh with eight.
Charles Bissue, a different candidate who withdrew from the contest just before the conference, received 12 votes.
Disunity
Mr. Agyapong said that the party may become divided as a result of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the party's Ashanti Regional Chairman, ordering all regional chairmen to back Mr. Boadu's candidacy.
He said, "Wontumi should calm down; he does not own the party.
Mr. Agyapong said that he had learned his lesson and that the reason for the party's division is because its leaders publicly promote candidates. This time, I made the decision not to publicly support anyone in order to maintain party unity.
Winners
Delegates, according to him, will always back a worthy candidate.
"People will vote for you if they think you are good and they trust your work. But for the first time in the NPP's political party history, you can show 15 regional chairmen raise their hands in protest after being spanked. They have suffered a scandal. That's all I have to say. Before the party's national delegates meeting, he claimed that the 15 regional chairmen, led by Chairman Wontumi, had shown poor faith in the party.
