According to El Chiringuito journalist Jose Alvarez, Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta is on the verge of joining Barcelona this summer.

Azpilicueta has entered the final year of his contract at Chelsea, and there have been suggestions that he could be on the move amid interest from Barcelona.

According to Jose Alvarez, Barcelona are currently in advanced talks with the Blues for the Spaniard, and an agreement is only a "matter of days" away.

The exact transfer fee has not been disclosed, but Alvarez stated that Barcelona has'stalled' talks with teammate Marcos Alonso due to the cost.

Azpilicueta has been a standout performer for Chelsea over the last decade, but he appeared to be slowing down at the end of the previous season.

The Blues still regard him highly, but given the club's plans to sign three top central defenders during the current transfer window, he could be on the move.

Chelsea have already signed Kalidou Koulibaly and are in talks with Presnel Kimpembe of Paris Saint-Germain and Jules Kounde of Sevilla.

Azpilicueta could still play as Reece James' replacement at right wing-back, but a move to Barcelona could guarantee him starts ahead of the World Cup.

The 32-year-old has recently established himself as a regular for Spain's national team and would not want to be left out of the squad for the major showpiece in Qatar.

If Azpilicueta leaves, it is unclear whether Chelsea will look for a replacement at right wing-back.

When James was injured last season, Ruben Loftus-Cheek filled in on occasion, but manager Thomas Tuchel may prefer a better option in the squad.

Jonathan Clauss' transfer has been much discussed, but the 29-year-old international is now on his way to Marseille after Lens accepted their £6.8 million offer.
