As Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the current chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has defended the need for another term, it looks that the race for the chairmanship has begun.

The party's current general secretary, John Asiedu Nketia, who will soon finish his fourth term as the party's main scribe, is considering running for the same job.

But Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo feels that in order to remain in the running for the party's national executive officers, he has outperformed himself.

On July 18, 2022, Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo remarked on 3FM that he and the NDC's present national leadership had demonstrated such great ability to seize control for the party after having led it in opposition to come from a 31 seat legislative disadvantage.

"Myself and my other executives were entrusted with this party in 2018 at the time we went to the election in 2016 and lost by over one million votes," he said.

"We lost by more than 53 seats in parliament, but within a short time we fought extremely hard and increased our votes by more than two million votes. Our number of parliamentary seats went grown from 106 to 137.

He believed that if it weren't for the military being utilised to meddle in and sway the election results at various coalition centres, the NDC would already be in power and have gained an additional five seats.

The current chairman congratulated himself on breaking records: during his leadership, Ghana had a hung parliament for the first time in the country's political history, and the opposition party produced a Speaker of Parliament for the first time under the Fourth Republic.

There are many things of which we may be proud, he said. "Even the death of the party's founder could not stop us from performing the way we have done. We have brought unity to the party.

According to him, the NDC is well prepared to win in 2024 and his administration is prepared to restore the NDC to power.

He said, "And I feel that I can continue to give that leadership."
