Akufo-Addo maintains his commitment to free, high-quality primary and secondary education.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emphasized his administration's dedication to the flagship Free Senior High School program.
He stated that, despite current economic challenges, his government will continue to prioritize the Free SHS program due to its impact on the youth.
"The government will continue to intervene and will be responsible for providing free, high-quality primary and secondary education to all." All Ghanaian youth should have the right to an education.
“Education is the equalizer for opportunities. I want every child to be in school not only for what they learn in the books but also the life experiences that they will gain,” he said at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), in Ho, on Friday, July 15.
Akufo-Addo was in Ho for the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the University.
The Free SHS programme has become topical in recent times with government seeking a programme with the International Monetary Fund, IMF, amid an economic downturn.
Calls for a review of the programme has heightened whiles fears of the IMF calling for a scrapping or massive review of the programme has also come up.
The government insists that Free SHS will continue in its current form, despite any concerns or criticism.
The Free SHS policy is one of the main policies of the Ghanaian government, which began in September 2017.
"Every child in Ghana who qualifies for and is placed in a public Senior High School for his secondary education will have his/her fees absorbed by the government," according to the Free SHS secretariat's website.

Mr Alhaji Abdullai Salia, Divisional Officer Grade 3 in charge of operations at the Madina Fire Service, has refuted the claim that the Ghana Fire Service has attended fire scenes without water in their fire tender on several occasions.
Mr Alhaji Salia revealed on "Ay3 Hu" on Hot FM 93.9 MHz that sometimes the water from the tender runs out while trying to extinguish the fire, so they either request some from another fire station or return some of their thunders to fetch water, so when residents see the vehicle leaving the scene, they believe the fire service arrived without water.
According to him, sometimes, the callers get angry when the service requests their contact number and also ask for a proper landmark of the scene, due to that they sometimes get missing when attending a fire scene.
Mr Alhaji Abdullai Salia pleaded that those who call to report fire incidence should exercise patience with the officer who receives the call to properly specify the location (landmark) of the incident scene to enable them to get to the scene quickly to save lives and properties.
He said they sometimes get to the fire scene late due to interruption of the other road users, especially among some ‘trotro’ drivers and other private vehicle users because they hardly pave the way.
Mr Salia advised the public to desist from fighting fire with water without disconnecting the electricity.
According to him, the Madina fire station recorded 67 cases between January and June in 2021 and 50 cases between January and June this year, meaning there has been a decrease in cases in this year 2022
