Sonny Perkins set to join Leeds United

Leeds United have reportedly completed the deal to sign Sonny Perkins as a free agent this summer. According to Fabrizio Romano, Leeds United have made yet another coup in the transfer market. It appears they have convinced Sonny Perkins to sign a contract at Elland Road, with the youngster set to become the latest addition to the club’s pool of exciting young talents. Perkins was a product of the West Ham youth academy. A centre-forward by trade, he has enjoyed rapid growth in recent years, as he has performed consistently in youth competitions. He has particularly impressed with his technical quality and versatility in the final third which makes him a modern-day centre-forward. In addition to his flexibility in the attack, Perkins can be extremely lethal in front of goal. He notably scored 12 times in 21 Premier League 2 matches last season, emerging as one of the rising stars in the competition. He even went on to earn three appearances for the West Ham senior side. However, Perkins’ spell at West Ham came to an end earlier in the summer when he refused to extend his contract. Having become available as a free agent, the 18-year-old was in the crosshairs of Tottenham and Aston Villa. But it appears the youngster has opted to join Leeds United. Embed from Getty Images Although the Whites are coming on the back of a disastrous campaign that saw them narrowly escape relegation, the former West Ham prodigy believes Elland Road could be an ideal destination, as he looks to take the next step in his career. With Patrick Bamford serving as the only recognised goalscoring outlet, there is not much competition in the Leeds United camp, as far as the number nine slot is concerned. It should pave the way for Sonny Perkins to earn an immediate breakthrough, though he may have to compete with Sam Greenwood and Joe Gelhardt. Nevertheless, Perkins’ technical ability and goalscoring prowess should tune in well to Jesse Marsch’s tactical setup. And with the likes of Jack Harrison, Brenden Aaronson and Luis Sinisterra providing the creativity in the final third, the 18-year-old could certainly find himself at home at Elland Road next season.

The 18-year-old left West Ham in bitter circumstances in July, with the Hammers releasing a statement expressing their discontent over the player’s decision. Perkins had been at West Ham since 2019, but only made three senior appearances - one of which was in their 3-2 defeat to Leeds in January. The London club had offered him a new professional deal this summer, but the teenager rejected the offer in a bid for more regular minutes. He now looks set to sign for Leeds following the end of his contact at the London Stadium, ostensibly on a ‘free’ transfer, although that is not entirely true.
