Salam Mustapha asks TESCON to calm down and pledges to fix their problem.
Salam Mustapha, the recently chosen National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pleaded with the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) members to be calm while he attempts to address their concerns.
He added that he was unhappy with the prohibition against their voting at the party's just concluded delegate conference.
On Saturday, July 16, the NPP received injunctions preventing its student wing, TESCON, and local proxy voters from casting ballots at the polls.
Voting was impacted for more than 300 students.
Executives at TESCON voiced their disappointment with the circumstance.
"[NPP leadership] do not recognise us as the intellectual wing as it has always been professed by the party because you bus intellectuals from various regions for them to travel miles to the capital city of the country, risking their lives just to disenfranchise them without any reason," they declared in a statement they released following the elections.
"Until we see the aforementioned injunction, the party who filed it, and the reason for the injunction, as well as give us a positive assurance to resolve the ambiguity on TESCON Representations during Regional and National Conferences in the next Annual National Delegates Conference, we will advise ourselves accordingly.
The statement continued, "At Accra Sports Stadium, allocation of stands were made for all delegates with the exception of TESCON, which clearly implies that the party did not factor us and never valued us in the planning of the entire event.
Salam Mustapha, who works at the Vice President's office as well, responded to this by saying, "To break the 8 is going to take a lot of effort, and the youth wing must be a strong force to work with.
"I was personally really unhappy and upset since I was going to receive many votes from them; I had worked so hard with TESCON. Many of them called me crying, and it hurt my heart to hear it.
"I want to beg them to calm down; I know their strategy; let's handle this properly. Without a doubt, we'll fix the problems.
