Tamale Central Member of Parliament (MP), Murtala Mohammed wants the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate vote buying that may have taken place during the just concluded 2022 Delegates Conference of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
A National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmaker has called on the OSP to investigate Stephen Asamoah Boateng popularly known as Asabee.
At the weekend at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, Asabee was one of the candidates vying for the national chairman position.
Before the election began, he told reporters that he was aware that some of his opponents had paid money to delegates to influence their voting patterns.
Although he admitted that he paid the money to the delegates, he stressed that it was only for transportation, not to buy their votes.
Reacting to this revelation by Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Murtala Mohammed says the Office of the Special Prosecutor must investigate him and every other candidate who paid money to buy votes during the NPP elections.
“Money has been spent to such an extent that people would have expected that in the prevailing unacceptable economic circumstances that you have subjected the people of this country to, you would have done everything possible to prevent it.
“It is very clear that even Asamoah Boateng, who made this allegation, himself said that he paid for the transport of the people who are coming. If you look at the total number, it means he could have paid millions of Ghana cedis. I think the special prosecutor should also be interested in whether taxes were paid. How he got the money,” Murtala Mohammed told TV3 during an engagement on the New Day show on Tuesday.
Despite reportedly committing millions of Ghana cedis to transport delegates from across the country, Asabee failed to get the required votes to become the National Chairman of the NPP.
