The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has warned the public against placing LPG cylinders, both empty and filled, near open flames or flammable liquids.
The authority noted that such actions could have caused a fire to break out, resulting in loss of life and property.
The Head of Consumer Services at the NPA, Eunice Budu Nyarko, interacting with the public during a public awareness and sensitization exercise in Cape Coast, explained the importance of consumers of petroleum products such as LPG being aware of their safety.
The exercise, which was carried out by a team from the NPA's national and regional offices, was seen to involve shopkeepers, pedestrians and commercial drivers as well as fuel retail outlets.
The team visited Tantre Truck Station, Kotokuraba Market and Abura Taxi and Market among others.
Mrs. Nyarko stressed the need for users of petroleum products to follow all safety protocols as non-compliance has the potential to ignite fires at home and workplaces.
She appealed to the public to buy fuel from the relevant petrol stations as these stations are often monitored by the NPA so that the quality of their products can be guaranteed.
NPA Central Regional Manager David Owusu Kena also said the exercise is to educate and create awareness among consumers about petroleum products due to a number of complaints of dissatisfaction with the kind of service they are getting at the pumps.
According to him, although the NPA was sensitizing consumers of petroleum products on how to safely handle such cases, the objective was for consumers to approach the NPA so that their complaints would be resolved in the shortest possible time.
Regarding the suspected cases of under-supply, he said "So far the stations we have tested, their volumes with 10 liters cannot have any form of under-supply".
According to him, the NPA was conducting both monthly and spot checks to ensure that fuel retail outlets were not shortchanging consumers by under-supplying and selling substandard petroleum products.
Mr Kena called on consumers to have more confidence in the NPA, noting that this was a problem because some consumers think the authority was in bed with oil service providers.
