Who is a better goalkeeper, Courtois or Ter Stegen?
Many Barcelona supporters found it frustrating to watch Ter Stegen last season. The German would stop an incredible shot one minute, only to miss a shot my grandma could have stopped two or three plays later. The fact that Ter Stegen is one of the best goalkeepers in the world when he is at his best just made the situation worse. Let's compare the two La Liga heavyweights' shot stoppers and see how they stack up against one another with the first El Clasico of the new season just around the corner.
Front to Front
I've selected four statistics from last season that I felt were relevant to compare between the two goalkeepers. were indicative of a world class goal keeper: goals conceded per 90 minutes, save percentage, penalty save percentage, and clean sheet percent.
Let's see how Marc Andre Ter Stegen measures up 1st.
Ter Stegan conceded 1.09 goals every 90 minutes with a save percentage of 70.3%. In addition, Ter Stegen saved 16.7% of all penalties conceded and maintained a clean sheet percentage of 31.9%. I've certainly seen Ter Stegen perform much better in previous seasons, but these numbers are still better than most keepers out there.
Unfortunately for Marc, Courtois wasn't one of them, as the Belgium shot stopper outperformed the German in all four areas. Courtois conceded 0.87 goals every 90 minutes with a save percentage of 78.1%. In addition, Ter Stegen saved 50.0% of all penalties conceded and maintained a clean sheet percentage of 42.9%. These numbers were enough to win our dreaded rivals La Liga and the Champions League last season, something we will all be hoping won't happen again this time around.
Conclusion
I'm not going to make excuses, last season Courtois was simply the better Goalkeeper, and it reflected in Real Madrid's success as a team. Though, it was a huge help that Real Madrid's backline was consistently more solid than ours. Hopefully Barcelona can complete the signings of Jules Kounde, Azpeliqueta, and Marco Alonso to reinforce the backline, giving Ter Stegen less headaches on a match to match basis. Furthermore, we will all be hopeful that Xavi can revitalize Ter Stegen's form to bring him back to being one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
