Everyone is aware that Leeds United's Eric Cantona scored the first Premier League hat-trick in the same holy month of August 1992, but fewer people are aware that Brian Deane scored the league's first goal. After that, the newly formed English top division had to wait until November to witness another treble, this time from Mark Robins of Norwich City. By the end of the 1992–93 season, there had been a total of 14 trebles, including one from Gordon Strachan, who was 36 at the time. This treble would stand as the Premier League's oldest treble hat-trick for a decade until Teddy Sheringham, 37, took the title.

With the ceremonial passing of the match ball to the player, extra praise if the hat-trick was "perfect" (one right footed goal, one left footed goal, and a headed goal), and the rare occasions when a player goes completely off the rails and scores four or five goals, the symbolism and significance of scoring a hat-trick in football remain unabated. A player has yet to record a double hat-trick, despite 361 hat-tricks being scored in the first 30 Premier League seasons, or an average of 12 per season. But only five players have ever scored five goals in a single game, so it only makes sense that Sergio Aguero, dubbed "Seor Hat-Trick," has the most hat-tricks in Premier League history.

1) Sergio Aguero (12 hat-tricks)

2) Alan Shearer (11 hat-tricks)

3) Robbie Fowler (nine hat-tricks)

4) Harry Kane (eight hat-tricks)

4) Thierry Henry (eight hat-tricks)

4) Michael Owen (eight hat-tricks)

7) Wayne Rooney (seven hat-tricks)

8) Luis Suarez (six hat-tricks)

Random hat-trick information pack

Given that you've made it this far, it's safe to assume that you love hat-tricks. Therefore, enjoy this bonus supercut of Premier League hat-trick facts:

The player with the most flawless hat-tricks is Robbie Fowler, who has three. With four goals altogether, three of which came against Ipswich in 2002, former Bolton striker Fredi Bobic continues to hold the record for the fewest goals ever scored by a player to record a hat-trick in the Premier League. In August 1996, Fabrizio Ravanelli became the first player to score a hat-trick in the Premier League for Middlesbrough against Liverpool.

The only replacement to ever score four goals in a game is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who accomplished this feat in 1999 against Nottingham Forest. Although Sadio Mane appears to be leaving the Premier League this summer, nobody will likely break his record for the fastest hat-trick (2m 56s). When Cristiano Ronaldo scored three goals against Tottenham at Old Trafford in March 2022, he broke the previous record for the longest time between hat-tricks in the Premier League (14 years, 59 days). Wigan's match against Blackburn in 2007 is the only one in which a player from each team scored three goals: Roque Santa Cruz and Marcus Bent, respectively.

The only player to score a hat-trick both at home and away against the same opponent in the same season is Emmanuel Adebayor, who did it in 2007–08 against Derby County. In two Premier League games, two players have scored hat-tricks for the same team. Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy for Leicester also played against Southampton, this time in the Saints' infamous 9-0 home loss in October 2019, together with Jermaine Pennant and Robert Pires for Arsenal against Southampton in 2003. Oh, and the Premier League is still waiting for a defense to score three goals. Steve Watson of Everton is frequently credited with scoring three goals against Leeds United in 2003, but regrettably, he was playing as a midfielder at the time.
