No less than eight first-team players have been informed they have no future with Tottenham Hotspur now that Djed Spence has finally been signed and Antonio Conte is about to enter his first full season as manager of Tottenham Hotspur.
Spence's £20 million/€24 million signing from Middlesbrough to Tottenham comes after the club made headline-grabbing transfers for Richarlison (€58 million from Everton), Yves Bissouma (€29.2 million from Brighton), and Ivan Perisic (free transfer from Inter Milan).
The addition of right-back Spence means that, perhaps not unexpectedly, Matt Doherty, Emerson Royal, and Japhet Tanganga no longer have a future at the club as Conte builds his ideal squad.
Both were employed last year, but Conte's suggestion this week to utilize Lucas Moura as a right wing-back, after converting Perisic from winger to wing-back during their time at Inter, spells the end for the current occupants of the position.
With Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon expected to split playing time on the left side, Sergio Reguillon has been told he is no longer needed on the other flank.
Eight players have been told they can leave by Tottenham:
Harry Winks
Japhet Tanganga
Bryan Gil
Tanguy Ndombele
Giovani Lo Celso
Sergio Reguilon
Emerson Royal
Matt Doherty
No-Celso Giovani
Along with Harry Winks, an academy product, and Spanish winger Bryan Gil, midfielders Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso, who spent time last season on loan at Lyon and Villarreal, respectively, are also unnecessary.
The Everton team of Frank Lampard has been connected with a bid for Winks, and Spurs will be hoping to raise at least a portion of the €163 million that the eight players are collectively valued at by Football Transfers' in-house algorithm.
Spurs have already gained €38 million from sales this summer, with the majority coming from Steven Bergwijn's €31.25 million transfer to Ajax and the remaining figure coming from Cameron Carter-Vickers €7 million transfer to Scottish champions Celtic.
Spurs' fourth-place result in the Premier League last season earned them a spot in this season's Champions League group stages.
