Transferring players in football may be a highly hard process.
There are numerous aspects that need to be taken into consideration for a transaction to be completed behind the scenes, even if all fans see are the rumors, the confirmation of the deals, the reported transfer cost, and the stated wages.
Another team might be waiting in the wings to pounce and make an eleventh-hour bid as one club tries to close a deal.
Here are 11 instances of transfer deals being sabotaged.
The most current should come first.
Inter and all of their supporters are furious about this agreement. Bremer, a standout player for Torino, and Inter reached a personal agreement back in January 2022, with the Brazilian and his agency committing to the Nerazzurri for the summer.
All Inter had to do to get a player who was crowned Serie A Defender of the Year the previous campaign was pay a comparatively low sum.
But Inter took an inordinately long time to finalize the agreement, allowing Juventus to pounce in the middle of July.
The Nerazzurri fans went crazy when Bremer broke his contract with Inter, allegedly because he was tired of waiting for them to sign him!
In the 2022 January transfer window, Tottenham and Antonio Conte were scrambling for attacking reinforcements and hoped to work out a deal for Porto great Luis Diaz.
Spurs would eventually lose out to Liverpool in a deal, though.
Aaron Barton of Proxima Jornada, a journalist and expert in Portuguese football, claims that the reason Tottenham's deal fell through was because Porto didn't think they could secure add-ons that would raise the player's price.
Cristiano Ronaldo completed a spectacular return to Manchester United in the summer of 2021.
With a possible return to the Premier League, the Portuguese superstar made it plain that he want to leave Juventus.
When Manchester United learned of his availability, they jumped at the chance to sign him and bring him back to Old Trafford, even though Manchester City had first seemed to be the more likely destination.
Naturally, Man Utd wanted to get Ronaldo in order to succeed on the field, but they also wanted to prevent the PR catastrophe of having one of their all-time greatest players join rivals Man City.
Barcelona purchased players on the open market in the summer of 2021 when they signed Eric Garcia, Memphis Depay, and Sergio Aguero to Bosman contracts.
One deal they believed to have been completed was Georginio Wijnaldum, a free agent who had left Liverpool.
Later, he would be drawn to PSG's wealth and their generous offer of a much, much greater contract.
Wijnaldum's transfer to PSG has been a disaster, and everyone involved is probably wishing he had gone to Barcelona instead.
Barcelona went on another buying binge in 2018, spending over €146 million on new hires, including Malcom, a winger from Bordeaux.
It is reasonable to say the move, which was their most expensive purchase of the window and cost over €40 million, didn't work out for anyone other than the selling club, Bordeaux.
Malcom was really going to sign with Roma, but he changed his mind last-minute and decided to transfer to Spain, so Barca will be cursing their luck.
Few Manchester United supporters will consider Alexis Sanchez's tenure with the team to have been anything but a massive financial waste, and it might be even more difficult to accept such a move in light of the fact that Manchester City nearly made the same error before them.
The midfielder was wanted by Man City manager Pep Guardiola six months before he eventually moved to Old Trafford, but a deal couldn't be finalized in time. Khaldoon Al Mubarak, the club president at the time, claimed that when City tried again to sign Sanchez in January of that year, they were turned away by the player's enormous pay demands.
Since joining the team, Jorginho has exceeded expectations for Chelsea supporters, having assisted the Premier League team in 2021 in winning the Champions League. However, the Italian international, who came so close to joining Man City, might have very easily been playing for Chelsea's rivals in the May championship.
In an interview with Brazilian commentator Ale Oliveira late last year, the midfielder admitted, "I wasn't intended to come to Chelsea, man."
"I was meant to be at another club by now. another club in England. It's not a secret, though. You can find anything on the internet. City is Manchester.
"And then it occurred as it happened, and I ended myself at Chelsea, which is also Chelsea, man, with history. In Chelsea's case, everything happened pretty quickly. I was already in London when I saw it and I immediately said, "Let's go."
John Obi Mikel was acquired by Manchester United from the Norwegian team Lyn in April 2005. The issue was that Chelsea later asserted that they and Manchester United had a signed contract for Mikel, and that the player's agents were not involved in the transaction.
Few players have contributed as much to Arsenal's success in the 1990s as Emmanuel Petit, but the French midfielder was on the verge of joining North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The former France international said that Petit was in London to negotiate with Tottenham about leaving Monaco. When Arsenal learned of the proposal, they requested Petit to wait to sign any contracts until he had spoken with Arsene Wenger.
Sir Alex Ferguson, the legendary manager of Manchester United, has frequently stated that one of his biggest regrets while in charge of the Red Devils was not being able to sign intrepid player Paul Gascoigne.
In 1988, Manchester United believed they had an agreement to bring Gazza from Newcastle, but Tottenham ultimately prevailed in the bidding.
