Some of us went to college because of the allowance; don't cancel it - Teacher trainees pleading with the government.
We’re able to complete our education because of our allowance, Ghanaian trainees visit the IMF
Captain Smart claims that the government has decided to cancel nursing and teacher trainee allowances.
The Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) has urged the government not to eliminate the teacher trainee allowance, as some Ghanaians have suggested in order to reduce government spending.
According to TTAG, the cancellation of the allowance will have a significant impact on trainee teachers' education because the majority of them rely on it for their studies, according to 3news.com.
They also stated that the government must ensure that their allowance is not revoked during the negotiations for an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout.
The President of the Ashanti, Brong and Ahafo regions (ASHBA) branches of TTAG, Adu Kwabena Dennis, stated at the 26th delegates conference of TTAG that one of their fears is that the allowance will be cancelled as part of an IMF conditionality.
"We urge the government not to cancel the allowance." I say this because if the allowance is canceled, thousands of students who rely on it for survival will be disadvantaged.
"I must admit that it was the allowance that encouraged most of us to attend college, and it is the same allowance that has kept some of us going." In fact, some of us rely on the allowance to pay our tuition and purchase books," he explained.
Some Ghanaians have suggested that the government cancel some of its social intervention policies, such as teacher and nursing training allowances, to help alleviate the country's current hardship. They even claim that the IMF will force the government to cancel the allowances before providing the $2 billion bailout.
Furthermore, renowned broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has described the government's nursing and teacher trainee allowances as the most useless policy Ghana has ever had.
According to him, the trainee allowance policies are inequitable and were implemented solely to score political points by the government.
Captain Smart, who made these remarks on his Maakye show on Onua TV, which GhanaWeb monitors, suggested that the government has already decided to cancel these allowances even before its bailout negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) begin.
"You needed the IMF to tell you to cancel the trainee allowance." Because we saw from afar that there are certain useless political promises that will bring the government to a halt and eventually bring it down," he said in Twi.
