Chloe Richard stared at her iPhone 11 as her fingers hovered above its screen. She hesitated. Since when had she, Chloe Richard, the only daughter to Richard Hurling the richest man in Richmond begged a boy. Her eyes remained fixated on the screen of the phone as the name 'Jacob' displayed. Then with a sigh, she threw her phone on her purse. No, she wasn't going to call him. It was stupid, ridiculous and not worth it, she thought.
Jacob was giving her a cold shoulder after she had given a harmless opinion about his house being cheap over some dinner date the other night. He didn't take it as lightly as she had thought, talk about being open-minded. She rolled her eyes and sat Infront of her mirror and passed the brush through her blonde hair before pulling it back into a ponytail. Then, she grabbed her purse and walked downstairs.
Her father was reading a morning newspaper as she walked and pecked his cheek, while her mother was helping Mina to set the table.
"Morning" she smiled at her father, who had stopped reading the paper to greet his only daughter.
"Morning dear" he replied.
"Morning everyone, sorry, I can't join you today for breakfast" she said and begun walking towards the door, she however knew her mother would have none of it, she could hear her steps racing towards her and tried to hurry her steps.
"Hold it there young lady" Mrs Richard shouted and Chloe twirled around groaning.
"Mom?"
Mrs Richard was holding a dish of packed lunch on her hand. "I knew you would skip lunch again, so I had Mina packed something. If you can't have breakfast with us, atleast carry it to school, you may need it later"
"There is a cafeteria at school" Chloe rolled her eyes.
"I know, but I don't trust you" Mrs Richard said.
Chloe heaved a sigh of frustration. She had no energy to argue with her mother so early in the morning. She accepted the dish with a forced smile, she would throw it away later, or give it to someone else. She stepped out of the house shutting the door behind her, cutting her mother's voice. The streets were deserted as usual, with the fancy houses clamouring of how rich their owners were, it was like a completion, with every house owner trying to outdo the neighbors.
The sky was blue and empty as if it wasn't ready for company, Chloe caught sight of Michael–her personal driver. He was smoking while waiting for her next to the black BMW she was accustomed to use. As soon as he saw her, he dropped the cigar to the ground and crushed it with his boot before approaching her with an awkward smile.
"Miss Chloe" he muttered uneasily.
"Drop the 'miss thing' Mike, I'm just Chloe. My father is not here" she rolled her eyes.
"Sorry Chloe" he smiled.
"Shall we?"
"Yes"
Chloe sat at the back seat as Mike ignited the car, she slumped her back against the seat and placed her earphones on her ears before staring outside through the car window.
"Are you okay Chloe?" Mike asked as he drove out of the compounds. She weaved a smile and replied.
"Yes, I'm fine"
She was sorrounded the instant Mike dropped her to school. Her popularity didn't give her any slight chance of anonymity even when she needed it. Sasha was waiting for her in company of two other girls, who were hoping to gain popularity through association, Chloe hated such type of people and only saw them as clingy.
She hugged Sasha and gave the two girls a dull smile.
"Did you make any amendments?"
"No, he is still sulking"
"What on earth did you say about his house?" Sasha smiled, her blue eyes sparkling with excitement.
Chloe begun walking "I asked how much his house costed to build and said that it looked cheap"
Sasha broke out into a hearty laughter which made her to almost toppled over, when she finished laughing, she gazed at Chloe with teary eyes.
"That was so inappropriate"
"How in appropriate is it?" Chloe asked, vaguely irritated.
"Well. You don't give negative opinions to people you are dating" Sasha whispered softly.
"You know me Natasha, I'm not fake"
Chloe and Natasha entered the school building, a long corridor stretched before them with students loitering in the hallways. As soon as the other students saw them, distant chatters filled the corridors.
"I can't believe he's dumped her"
It was meant to happen, she is so rude and full of herself."
"Look at her, I'll kill to have her. Jacob is so foolish to dump her"
Chloe exchanged looks with Sasha, what was all this rumours about her being dumped? Then, her eyes rested on Jacob who was walking towards her direction with his right hand drapped around a girls shoulder. The moment he saw her, he hesitated for a while then changed direction. Chloe felt as if her feet had suddenly been glued on the floor. Sasha tugged her arm. "Let's go"
Chloe allowed Sasha to propel her down the corridor, up a flight of stairs, and into the Biology class. She slid into an empty seat and fixed her eyes outside the window.
"What will you do now" Sasha asked.
"About what?"
"Jacob"
"It's nothing, it's his loss anyway. I've never enjoyed his company nonetheless" She lied. Chloe liked Jacob than any other boy she had ever known, she knew she wasn't in love with him, but knew she liked him, and had hoped their relationship would last longer than her previous ones. She wasn't good with maintaining relationships. Plus, Jacob was good in bed.
"You said he is good in bed"
"He is…well…he makes me cum" Chloe trailed off.
"He is just a boy. There is always a fresh material" Sasha said to try and lift up Chloe's mood.
The bell ranged and students flooded the classroom, Chloe noticed how the other students were staring at her, she silently swore to make Jacob pay for humiliating her the way he did. Couldn't he call her and tell her it was over? Why make it so obvious that they were no longer dating. Mr Dawson walked in and begun the lesson and Chloe was thankful as it shifted the attention from her.
The biology class passed in a blur, she picked her bag and left the class. The next day, she was earlier than usual, she could hear her mother yelling insults at Mina and couldn't help but wonder how life was for poor people. She had never struggled with to get anything ever since she was a child. She sat on her bed and took out her phone before swiping to Jacob's name and pressed delete. To hell with him. She couldn't place how a harmless remark would cause a breakup, unless….
Could he have found out? She wondered. She had a one night stand with Everett one of Jacob's buddy few days ago. Rubbing her temples, she stepped out of bed and slipped her fluffy slippers on then walked out of the house with her pyjamas still on. The air was fresh and clear as she stepped out of the house, then she caught sight of Jacob staring at the hedge, raw anger burned within her as she approached him.
"Jacob, what are you doing here"
Jacob face tilted towards her direction, he had been staring at something when she saw him. Jacobs house is few streets from Chloe's house and she knew he had walked to her house. Jacob preferred walking since he claimed it kept him fit and dispite how many times they had argued about her giving him a ride to school, he had always been adamant.
She looked at him, trying to control her anger. Jacob was attractive, not in a stunning way, but good-to- look-healthy-way. His jet black hair was cropped short and neat, and his skin sunburnt from spending too much time outdoors. His brown eyes were calm and composed and remained so even when he was nervous.
"I came to return this" he said producing a pair of exercise sneakers from his bag. Chloe had bought them for him and it had taken alot of persuasion for him to accept them.
"You can keep them"
"I can't" he said.
"What's wrong with you?" She blurted. She was angry because he was behaving like a kid. He had broke up with her without informing her, hence humiliating her at school, and now he was returning the gifts she had bought from him. Would he also request the gifts he had bought for her?
Jacob looked at her, before smiling, a crooked rueful smile.
"What's wrong with me?"
"Yes, cause you are behaving like a kid" she yelled.
He scoffed. "I thought you have self conscious Richard"
"Don't call me that Kol" she said. Jacob would only call her Richard when he meant to taunt her, but they were no longer dating, so he shouldn't call her such name. Jacob's jaws clenched, he also hated being called by his last name.
He dropped the sneakers on the ground and sighed. "I'm not doing this" he said.
"Doing what"
"Arguing with you"
"You know what, fine, I'll take them back, you scrap out all your rusty coins savings and buy cheap ones" she yelled and picked the sneakers from the ground.
Jacob meant as if to go but hesitated. "Don't you have some to tell me?"
"About what"
"Everett" he muttered. There it was. So she was right, it wasn't because of her remark about his house. She felt uncomfortable, he looked at her and she looked away, why was she feeling guilty. Jacob scoffed and begun walking away.
"I was drunk" she said, slowly looking his direction.
"But you kept it from me"
"Because I knew you will react the way you have done"
"Good bye Chloe Richard"
"Good bye to you Jacob Kol"
Chloe did not know how long she stood there after Jacob left. Some voices interrupted her and she looked up, she caught sight of some figures skating down the alleyway , she watched as they disappeared out of sight before walking back into the house.
She wanted to hurt him, to make him feel as bad as he had made her feel. Chloe never thought that Jacob meant anything to her until he said it was over, he didn't actually said it. She sighed thinking of what to do but nothing was forthcoming.
"I don't have feelings for Jacob, i just want him to see what he has lost. The nerve of him" she muttered angrily and sat on her bed. Then she remembered that her parents would be going to a conference meeting in New York during the weekend. Chloe left out a tremelous breath as her eyes sparkled with excitement. What if she host a party and use the opportunity to make Jacob jealous?
She picked her phone and dialled Sasha's number. As soon as she received the call, Chloe narrated her plan to her.
"You want to make him jealous?" Sasha asked casually.
"Yes. I want him to see what he has lost"
"Will he come"
"He has to" There was a pause from Sasha's side before she responded.
"You are falling in love with him Chloe"
"I'm not. I just want to prove to him that he can't just dump me like that. Can you imagine he returned the exercise sneakers I bought him from Paris"
"He did?"
"Yes" Chloe sucked in a deep breath. "Nobody calls it quits with me. I do"
"Okay, who will you make him jealous with"
For a moment, there was no response. Chloe was thinking. "Derrick" she said moving towards the dresser.
"Are you serious? Chloe, you know Derrick is a narcist"
Chloe rolled her eyes. "I'm not sleeping with him Natasha"
"I'm having a party at my house on Saturday. I'm going to announce it on my Instagram right now." Chloe said plaintively and hanged up.
*********
Nathan walked out of his room and stared at his sick father watching television in silence. For a few moments, he stood quite still, his hands dipped in the pocket of his jeans trousers. Then he started walking briskly towards him.
"I've been admitted in a new school dad" he said picking the keys to his father's cruiser.
"That's good news" his father said without moving his eyes from the television. Nathan knew his dad was angry at him. Ever since his mother left with Dax–his younger brother. He had never been himself. And when his dad was diagnosis with an illness that took his ability to walk, he knew things were never going to be the same again.
After his mother left, Nathan had spent most of his time in an underground boxing ring, since his father was no longer able to provide for them. Even the insurance company had abandoned him since the illness was not mentioned in their policy. The only time that they would be involved was incase of his death, where Nathan would be compensated.
At the start of the school year, Nathan had barely skimmed through his school course and was lagging behind, it was the main reason he was expelled in his previous school.
Nathan walked out of the house and walked towards his father's old cruiser packed in the driveway. He stopped and stared at his face through the mirror, seeing nothing but his bright green eyes reflected back at him. There was an ugly scar beneath his left eye which he had acquired during one of his underground fights. The memory was still fresh and his only regret was that he never won the fight. He entered the car and ignited it before driving to his new school. There was a picture placed just close to the front window with the name 'Elsie' on it. Sighing, he turned the picture so that it wasn't facing him anymore.
The sound of the cruiser's door slamming echoed as Nathan walked out, he stopped and stared at his new school before making his way to the admissions office where the secretary gave him his school timetable. As he sat waiting for any member of the school welcoming committee to show him around the school, scraps of memories floated to his mind.
(Two years ago)
Nathan parents had been quarrelling for some time until his mother decided to leave. Dax, decided to leave with his mother to her home in North Dakota and Nathan decided to stay. At around this time, he met Elsie–the love of his life. Then his father became sick, the finances were drained in hospital bills until there was no more money. Nathan was drawn into the underground fighting inoder to sustain his father and himself.
He could still remember his first fight. People were everywhere, milling around the ring. Nathan looked up, his opponent glared back at him. He was blonde with his hair a bit spiked up, and his tall body hunched on itself a little. Nathan sighed and rolled his head to try and release the tension he was feeling. His opponent moved forward and Nathan let him have the first hit, he tried to swerve and escape the punch but the opponent slammed into his gut.
By the time the fight was over, he could barely walk. When Elsie saw how bad he was hurt, she cried and Nathan laughed at her reaction.
"Why are you laughing" Elsie snapped.
"Because you look too cute when crying" Nathan said coolly and Elsie slapped his shoulder.
"It's not funny, you could have been killed"
"But I'm not" he said lightly.
"I can't do this Nathan" Elsie sighed. "I can't keep dating you if you keep risking your life like this"
"I have to" he said " it's the only way I can provide for myself and my dad"
Elsie swallowed, breathing hard. She tried to keep her voice steady and dignified. "We are done Nathan, I can't date a walking corpse"

(Present)
"Good morning Mr Nathan" a voice said. He did not immediately respond, he was still deep in thoughts to notice the redhead girl standing Infront of him.
"Excuse me" the girl called again. This time louder and Nathan lifted his gaze to her face and paused.
"I'm in the school welcoming committee and I've been assigned to show you around" She said.
Nathan stood as the girl introduce herself. "I'm Sasha." She said and Nathan nodded before following her. She led her down the few corridors, to the locker room, library and the school cafeteria.
"By the way" she said. "There is going to be a party at my friend's house this Saturday, can you go with me ?"
"You don't know me" he replied. Nathan was certainly not into parties.
"Alright, it was stupid of me to ask anyway."
"Our trip ends here. I have to go now" she said gazing at him. He stared back, in that instant, she had a sudden feeling that he might jerk her to him and kiss her hard without asking.
"Will there be any alcohol at your friends party?"
"Yes" she muttered with a smile. "A lot of alcohol"
"I hate parties" Nathan admitted. "But it'll be a bad gesture to deny a pretty girl like you"
Natasha eyes widened with surprise. "You think I'm pretty?" She asked lightly not sure how to respond to his statement.
"You are pretty" he smirked. "Don't you think you are pretty?" He questioned.
"It's just that my best friend gets all the attention most time and I get sideline"
"I'll come with you then. But it's only for a day. Only that" he said sternly.
"Noted" she smiled.
