The sheriff showed up and the two men sat and talked.
"So what did you find out sheriff?" Calvin asked as he
poured them both a cup of coffee.
"Have you ever heard of Dillion White?" Sheriff asked.
"Dillion White, yeah, my father told me about him. He
stole some diamonds over thirty years ago. Are you
saying the ones found at the Haworth's ranch are the
same ones?"
"That's right. It turns out Dillion and Dawn's father knew
each other, with Frank's help Dillion was never caught
with the diamonds so he couldn't be charged. But he was
charged with rape and break and enter."
Calvin was confused. "So if the two men were involved
with the stones why were they in the fireplace? Why didn't
Frank take them and split?"
"Dillion was the one who stole the diamonds, worth
millions of dollars. He made a deal with Frank. If he
agreed to hide the good while Dillion was in prison they
would split them down the middle once he was released."
Calvin got up and poured them another cup, it was
starting to all make sense. "But to hide them for over
thirty years, why?"
"Well, Dillion couldn't seem to stay out of trouble in jail,
kept getting more jail time. As the years passed old Frank
starting going senile. My guess is he forgot about them
and where he hid them."
"But how does Michael fit into all of this? Dawn said he
never met her father."
"Dillion hired Michael to defend him in another case, a
murder case. He killed his cellmate with his bare hands,
strangled him. He had no money so he made a deal with
Michael. Told him all about the diamonds and who was
hiding them for him. He was to get half the diamonds
once Dillion was released."
Calvin nodded, he had a feeling he knew where this was
going. "Let me guess, Michael betrayed him."
"You got it, Dillion got life with no chance of parole. He
was later found dead in his cell, murdered. I think Michael
arranged it. Got greedy and wanted the diamond all to
himself."
"And Dawn?" Asked Calvin. "How does she fit into all of
this?"
"It was only just a coincidence that he was dating Dawn.
My guess is he was surprised as well as delighted, making
it easier for him to get to the diamonds. There's
something else."
"What?" Calvin said, eyeing the sheriff.
"I'm checking into Frank Haworth's death."
Calvin was taken by surprise. "Why? He died of a heart
attack."
"I looked into his medical records. He had no history of
heart problems. I really believe Michael had something to
do with his death."
"Hell." Calvin shook his head in disgust. "So he hired
those two men to keep an eye on Dawn, hoping she
would lead them to the diamonds. Michael planned on
killing her all along, didn't he?"
The sheriff shook his head. "Yes."
"Sheriff, how did you find all this out?" Calvin asked.
"Dave confessed everything."
Calvin's head jerked up. "He's alive? I thought for sure I
had killed him, I mean, I hit him pretty hard."
"No, he's alive, got one bitch of a headache, and Micheal
will live, and has confessed. Those two will be going
away for a very long time." The sheriff said as he got up
to leave.
There were more details but it didn't matter. It was over
and Dawn was safe. The two men would go to prison, the
diamonds would be returned to their rightful owners.
Dawn was still asleep when the sheriff left so he made
them something to eat, which he served her in bed.
Calvin told her everything the sheriff had told him.
"My god, those diamond were there the whole time and I
never knew. Father never said anything. Now that I think
about it, he did some work on the fireplace, which I
thought was strange since there was nothing wrong with
it."
They stayed in bed making love and holding onto each
other. "Oh, I almost forget to tell you, Susan had a baby
girl. I said we'd go see them tomorrow if you're up to it."
Dawn smiled. "A girl, that's what Susan was hoping for.
I'm so happy for them."
Calvin pulled her in for a kiss. "Me too. I love you, Dawn,
you know that right?"
"I love you too, I always have, since the first time we
met." She strokes his cheek tenderly. "My cowboy, always
coming to my rescue.
He looks down at her. "I fell for you the first time I laid
eyes on you. I thought you were the prettiest girl in
school. I remember that one day you were sitting in the
stands at one of my games. I was at bat when I looked up
and saw some jerk harassing you."
Dawn giggled. "Yes, I remember that too. You hit a home
run, and instead of running the bases you ran up to where
I was and punched him. Then you had the nerve to ask
me to the dance."
"Yes I did, and you accepted," Calvin said and smiled.
"I couldn't say no after what you had done. But I didn't
make it easy for you, in the beginning, always turning you
down when you asked me out."
"You soon came around." He turned on his side to look at
her. "I love you, stay with me, marry me. We can have
everything we've talked about, a life together, a family."
He saw her stiffen and the tears spring to her eyes.
"I do love you, more than you'll ever know. But I--"
"But you're going back to Paris." He answered for her.
Calvin sat up with his back to her. It felt as though his
heart was being ripped right out of his chest. The woman
he loved more than life itself would rather live in Paris
than be with him.
Dawn moved to Calvin and put her arms around his waist,
kissing his back as the tears flowed freely from her eyes.
"Please don't hate me." She begged.
He felt the softness of her full luscious lips on his bare
back and the wetness from her tears. Pulling her into his
arms he looked at her. "I could never hate you. No matter
what you do I'll always love you. And if Paris is really
where you want to be, if that's what will make you happy
I'll not stand in your way. I love you, and I'm going to
show you just how much."
Laying Dawn down his hand when to that special spot
between her legs. Lips locked on her's he used his finger
to pleasure her. He felt her responding as she put her
arms around his neck as she pressed her body into his.
He soon replaced the finger with his throbbing erection.
She moved her hips in perfect harmony to his thrusts.
Thrusting harder and faster he felt her coming, then he
too let go.It was like an explosion of fireworks going off.
Leaving them both exhausted and drained.
He held her afterward. "When are you going back to
Paris?" He asked over the lump in his throat.
"I have to sign the final papers for the ranch day after
tomorrow. I'll be leaving then."
Calvin became quiet for some time after that. He had to
think of the right words before he spoke. "I won't spend
these last few days fighting with you."
She looked up at him, she could see how broken up he
was. Her own heart was breaking, hating herself for
hurting him. "So, what are you saying?" She asked, afraid
he was going to tell her to leave his house now.
"I'm going to love you, I'm going to make love to you
every chance I get till you leave." He then climbed back
on top, making her scream out in ecstasy.
