Dawn woke to the smell of bacon frying and knew Calvin
was cooking them breakfast. Smiling as she stretched,
her hand going to where he had slept. His side of the bed
was still warm, and his scent still lingered. She decided
to take a quick shower before going down. Getting up she
felt no embarrassment as she walked to the bathroom
naked, it felt right.
As the warm water flowed over her body she could still
feel Calvin's body on her, how it felt when he made love
to her. From what she remembered he was always a good
lover, gentle and loving. But now he was so much more
skilled, making love with so much passion, so intense.
Taking his time, making sure her needs were met. He did
things to her she never dreamed of, giving her the most
intense pleasure ever.
With her heart all warm and body glowing from the
aftermath of their lovemaking she dried off. Seeing his
shirt hanging on the bathroom door hook put it on.
Anxious to feel his arms around her hurried downstairs.
She no longer felt guilty about what she and Calvin were
doing. How could she? They had a connection, a bond,
an even bigger bond that he would never know about, for
she could not tell him.
And all those years ago, when they were in love and he
had taken her virginity, she knew the true meaning of
love. And now it wasn't just that the sex was amazing, it
was because she was still in love with him, and always
would be. If only it could last, but for his sake, she would
have to leave.
Hurrying down the stairs she called out his name, then
stopped in the doorway. He was not alone, with him was
a man, around the same age as Calvin.
Both men turned to look at her and seeing what she was
wearing, smiled. Suddenly she felt naked and exposed as
she stood there in nothing but his shirt. Looking away
from the man to Calvin she stammered. "Oh, I'm sorry, I-I
didn't know you had company."
The man gave her a friendly smile. She liked his smile, it
was genuine. And she felt as if she should know hi.
"Dawn, you remember Hank from high school?" He said
with a grin on his face, liking what she had on.
Hank held out his hand to shake hers. "Hi Dawn, it's been
a long time, and look at you, all grown up. It's great
seeing you again."
"Yes, it's good seeing you again. But if you two men will
excuse me I'll just run up and put some clothes on."
The men watched as she left the room.
Hank then turned to Calvin, a wide grin on his face. "I
thought you said you were going to stay as far away from
her as you could?"
"It's not what you think Hank." He answered.
"Like hell, it's not. She's in your home, wearing nothing but
your shirt. And you my friend have one hell of a smile on
your face. I haven't seen you looking this happy in years."
Calvin turned back to frying the bacon and eggs. "She had
to stay here. It wasn't safe at her place. I'm only protecting
her from harm."
Hank turned serious when he looked at his life long friend.
"She has turned into a very beautiful woman. What about
you Calvin? Who's going to protect you from Dawn?"
He turned and smiled at Hank. "I don't need protection
from Dawn."
Hank laid his hand on the other man's shoulder. "Have
you forgotten the shape you were in when she left you
years ago? What's going to happen when she goes back
to Paris?"
Calvin whirled around on him, anger clear in his voice. He
didn't like hearing what it was like when she had left. He
had turned into an angry young man, getting into trouble
with the law.
"Dawn didn't leave me, her father sent her away. As far as
her going back to Paris I plan on changing her mind."
"What about this man she is going to marry?" Hank
asked.
Calvin shakes his head. "Oh, believe me, that's never
going to happen."
Dawn returned minutes later, fully dressed and joined
them for breakfast. She hadn't realized how hungry she
was til her stomach growled.
They told Hank everything that had been going on.
"And you say this key was hidden in the fireplace?" Hank
asked, staring at it.
"Yes." She answered.
Hank held the key in his hand. "I wonder what it opens?"
"We were wondering the same thing," Calvin said when he
looked at Dawn.
Laying the key down Hank shakes his head. "I guess the
mystery is buried along with Mr. Haworth, you may never
find out."
She picked up the key and stared at it, her mind going
into overdrive. She couldn't stop thinking that whatever it
opens was still inside the house, maybe the fireplace.
"This key was buried in the fireplace, what if the thing it
opens is also in the fireplace?"
"She could be right?" Hank replied.
Calvin looked at her. "That would mean tearing the
fireplace apart."
The excitement of unlocking a mystery excited her. "Let's
do it."
Hank winked at her. "I know someone who can rebuild it
for you in no time. If you like I can help you tear it apart."
She turned to Calvin. "How about it, can we do it?"
He heard the excitement in her voice. And the sparkle
was back in her eyes. "Yes, if you're sure that's what you
want to do."
"I do," she answered.
Hank stood up to leave. "Count me in, but not today. It's
my anniversary and there's a party at my place tonight. I
want you both there, say around eight o'clock. The
fireplace can wait one more day." As he was walking out
he stopped to look at the pair. "Oh, and don't mention to
Susan that I ate when I was here. That darn woman is
always on me about my weight."
While they were washing up he started thinking about
what Hank had said about Dawn leaving. What if he
couldn't stop her from going? The thought of losing her
again was tearing him apart inside, his heart was
breaking.
Dawn noticed how quiet Calvin had become ever since
Hank left. She moved behind him. And since he wasn't
wearing a shirt reached out her hand and touched the
scars on his back. Lightly running her fingers over the
faded scars that were still so visible. She felt him
stiffened, then she placed her lips on his back, her lips
tracing along the scars.
Tears pricked her eyes at the thought of Calvin enduring
so much pain at the hands of her father. To her horror, he
turned angerly around, grabbing her wrists tightly. She
gasped out in pain, not understanding why he was so
mad. "Calvin, you're hurting me."
Feeling terrible about hurting Dawn he released her. "I'm
so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you."
She rubbed her wrists, a tear in her eye when she looked
up at him. "It's ok. I'm the one who's sorry. I didn't mean
to upset you."
Taking her hands he kissed her wrists, then looked at her.
"It wasn't you baby doll."
Lowering his mouth he kissed her with an intense hunger,
one that left her breathless and trembling. Closing her
eyes she let out a soft moan. It was all the
encouragement he needed.
Scooping her up in his arms carried her back to bed. They
wasted no time in tearing off each other's clothes, making
love as though their lives depended on it, totally draining
them.
Laying on his back, the sweat rolling off him he turned to
look at her. "Christ Dawn, if we keep going on this way it's
going to kill me. When did you become such a wild cat?"
In a soft timid voice, she whispered. "When I met you
again." She looked into his eyes.
Taking her hand he kissed it, his eyes going to her ring
finger. "You're not wearing the diamond."
"No." She answered. "I can't marry Michael, not after I've
cheated on him. Not until I can get you out of my system,
out of my head."
Calvin felt his muscles tightening as the anger swept
through him like a raging fire. "Wait one damn minute.
What the hell does that mean?" He demanded.
She pulled the covers over her and looked up at Calvin. "I
only meant that until I can get over you I can't marry
anyone."
"What about us? Why do you have to get over me? We
got something special going on here, can't you see that?"
Tears stung her eyes, a sob broke free when she spoke.
"The sexual attraction between us is overwhelming, but
it's not enough. Your life is here, mine is back in Paris."
She felt terrible, knowing she was hurting him.
"So what are you saying? That this is just a fling, that
you're using me to satisfy your needs till you go back to
your boring life, with Michael or whoever?"
Jumping out of bed in anger he pulled on his pants.
"No Calvin, that's not what I meant, and I'm not using
you."
But he stopped her from talking when he yelled. "Shut-up
Dawn, I don't want to hear it. I'm sick of all the mixed
messages you've been giving me." He went to walk out
but stopped, looking at her. "This is my room, get the hell
out." He barked at her.
She was hurt and shocked by his reaction and the way he
was talking to her. This was not the kind, soft-spoken
man she knew. This was a Calvin she didn't like, and she
too became angry. So getting out of bed she boldly
walked passed him, naked.
He watched her leave, he was sure she was swaying her
hips more than necessary. And couldn't help thinking she
looked damn good from this angle. As mad as he was
with her his body sprang to life, looking down he cursed
his body for betraying him.
To be continued.
