July 20, 2022 (AFP) -Steven Gerrard said that his team "had no quality" because Aston Villa asked their children to thank 1-0 victory over Brisbane Roar on Wednesday in friendship in Australia.
Villas began with the main customers, including Philippe Coutinho, but struggled for smoothness in the city of Townsville before the strike was late from Cameron Archer who was 20 years old maintaining an unbeaten preseason record.
The new signing of Boubacar Kamara stands out during the sour first half, but former Barcelona Star Coutinho had a limited impact before being replaced during rest when Gerrard sounded changes and brought youth.
"Our first round show has no spark, has no quality," said former Liverpool and England Great Great.
"The second half we have more energy, more creation and movement, and we can win more.
"I think all our former academy players are fantastic."
Villa, who ranked 14th in the Premier League last season, has defeated Leeds United 1-0 in a physical meeting in Brisbane on Sunday after starting their preseason by struggling Walsall 4-0.
They finished their Australian tour against Manchester United at Perth on Saturday.
"I think the goal we scored fantastic," Gerrard said about finishing Archer in the 77th minute.
"(Roar) has many men behind the ball ... sometimes it can frustrate."
Roar hopes to build their dare to fight Leeds last week, where they lost 2-1.
Villa, however, dictated earlier through Kamara who is dominant but does not have a final touch.
The patient's roar is waiting to do a counterattack and catch the villa sleeping sleeping in the 17th minute, only for long distance strikes Jez Lofthouse to sail in the upper right corner.
After a calm start, Coutinho released his luxurious leg movement, but failed to move the villa during the docile first half.
Right before rest, Villa finally triggered life when striker Danny Ens, who scored a goal against Leeds, had a golden opportunity from close range but was rejected by goalkeeper Macklin Freeke.
Gerrard changed the team to the goalkeeper and acting Captain Emiliano Martinez, and it succeeded when Villa began to float on the roar.
Dangerous archers slaughtered efforts to break the deadlock in the 7th minute before making a mistake shortly after that.
Former Queens Park Rangers and Southampton striker Charlie Austin made his debut for Roar after coming in the 69th minute but the only chance.
