Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes welcomed new manager Erik Ten
Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes invited new manager Erik Ten Hag's uncompromising demeanor towards dependability, saying the Premier League club had needed discipline before the Dutchman's appearance.
Ten Hag was selected manager of the Manchester club in April, supplanting interim mentor Ralf Rangnick, and Fernandes said he was pushing United's players to work on their timekeeping all along.
"We missed that for some time and discipline is significant," Fernandes told reporters on Wednesday. "Discipline is not just the manner in which you play, the position that you have, what you need to do; it's also off the pitch.
"Try not to be late for the meetings. Try not to be late for the meals. That is really significant, because assuming everybody is on opportunity and someone comes late, he should be punished.
"That is great that he's doing that (fining players for being late) and astonishing, because I like to be on time, so I will not definitely dislike that."
Fernandes added that he was not sure of his United and Portugal colleague Cristiano Ronaldo's future, which has turned into the subject of intense speculation lately.
Ronaldo, 37, has allegedly told the club he wants to pass on to play Champions League football, and didn't join the squad for the pre-season visit starting in Thailand, refering to family issues. Peruse full story
"I don't have the foggiest idea what Cristiano said to the club, to the manager, yet we need to respect his space," Fernandes said.
"Cristiano was our top scorer last season; he added goals. Yet, it's not on me; the club has to settle on the decisions and Cristiano makes his own. I don't have the foggiest idea what's happening in his mind, to leave."
United, who finished sixth in the Premier League last season, open the new association crusade at home to Brighton and Hove Albion on August 7.
