At a ceremony on Thursday, Sadio Mane of Bayern Munich was named African Footballer of the Year, beating out Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Chelsea's Edouard Mendy.
Sadio Mane of Bayern Munich has been named African Footballer of the Year for the second time.
The 30-year-old Senegalese international received the prestigious award at an awards ceremony on Thursday. Mane won the award ahead of former Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah and Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who both joined Bayern this summer.
Last season, Mane scored 23 goals for Liverpool, helping them win the FA Cup and EFL Cup. The Reds also reached the Champions League final, losing 1-0 to Real Madrid, and finished just one point behind Premier League champions Manchester City.
On the international stage, Mane led Senegal to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations in February. In the final, he scored the game-winning penalty kick as his country defeated Salah's Egypt on penalties. Mane had one more goal than Salah during the tournament.
Since 1992, the Confederation of African Football has awarded the African Footballer of the Year award. France Football, the Ballon d'Or's organizers, previously awarded an alternate version.
Salah previously received the prestigious award in 2017 and 2018. The award was last given out in 2019, when Mane received it. Riyad Mahrez, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Yaya Toure, Samuel Eto'o, Didier Drogba, and George Weah are among the previous winners.

The rankings in question are created by the football statistics website FiveThirtyEight, where the Soccer Power Index compares 640 teams from around the world after each match. Each club was assigned a rating between 1 and 100 based on two factors: the previous season's rating and their market value as calculated by Transfermarkt.
The standings aren't looking good for Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, who have dropped to third place with a score of 90.5, while Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea have dropped to sixth place with a score of 85.7. The Blues trail PSG, now led by Christoph Galtier following the dismissal of Mauricio Pochettino, and Champions League winners Real Madrid. They've risen to fourth and fifth place, respectively.
