Mali's military said on Thursday that three soldiers and three "terrorists" were killed after simultaneous early morning attacks in several towns in the center and west of the country, adding to a growing list of deadly incidents since last week.

In a statement, the military blamed Al-Qaeda jihadist Macin Katib for the attacks, which it said took place in and around the towns of Douentza, Koro, Sevare, Bapho, Segou and Kolokani.

It said one soldier and three terrorists were killed after a vehicle exploded in Douentz and gunfire ensued at 6:30 a.m. (local time and GMT).

In Kolokani, 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of the capital Bamako, "complex and simultaneous attacks targeting a detachment of anti-terrorist forces and a territorial brigade of the gendarmerie" around 05:30 GMT killed two Malian soldiers and wounded three others, the army said.

In Koro, the vehicle exploded at around 05:15 GMT, leaving no casualties.

Missiles were fired at military compounds in Segou and Bapho, causing no casualties, while another vehicle was found in Mopti, near the town of Sevare, full of explosives but successfully destroyed without causing damage, the military said.

Claimed a number of victories

Earlier on Thursday, the military announced that it had "neutralized" 48 "terrorists" during several operations carried out between July 14 and 18 in the country's central and eastern Sahel.

In central Mali, "six terrorists (were) neutralized" in heavy fighting in the village of Mondoro following an attack on a military patrol on July 14, the army said in a statement.

It also said it "neutralized" two "armed terrorist groups" in Sokolo area and seven other "terrorists" in Kolongo, Niaro and Pogo municipalities on the same day.

According to her, by the end of the operations on July 18, two "terrorists" had been neutralized in the village of Timissa, eight in the village of Tiemaba and seven in Gnawouro.

Elsewhere, "18 terrorists" met the same fate on a stretch of road connecting the central city of Douentza with the city of Gao in the east, according to the statement.

Thousands of people have died and hundreds of thousands have been displaced in the jihadist campaign that began in 2012 in northern Mali and later spread to Niger and Burkina Faso.

Malian colonels, angered by the government's handling of the rebellion, seized power in August 2020 and staged another coup in May 2021.
