Chapter 28

Hailey’s pov ?

The whole Saturday after our movie night Friday, Nathan spent in Hannah’s arms.

And the worst part was they were in the house being a loved up couple, when I was under the same roof.

It was annoying, coming out for food or water only to see them cuddling or making out on the couch where the two of us fell asleep just the night before.

Nathan ignored me the whole day, not even sparing me a glance as his whole attention was on Hannah as she gossiped to him about some friend she didn’t like.

It was as if I had dreamt about us becoming friends and getting to know each other.

His words from the morning was still ringing in my head.

How quickly he had belittled me infront of his girlfriend how he told her I meant nothing to him, hurt me in a way.

To hear that you are worthless in the eyes of someone who is supposed to be your partner for life is a pain of a different level and I was experiencing it.

It was Sunday morning and I was at the breakfast table as Marie served me pancakes.

As I was eating breakfast, Hannah strode in the kitchen, rubbing her eyes and dressed in only a shirt that belonged to my husband.

Barefoot and her hair messy, she sat down on the dining table opposite me.

“Goodmorning Hailey,” she chirped in a cheerful voice with a smirk on her face.

She knew that I could hear all the noises they were making last night and now she was even displaying the evidence of their night activities in the form of a huge hickey on her neck.

“Hannah,” I said in a gruff tone, not bothering to look up at her.

“Pancakes?” She shrieked at Marie as she tried to serve her.”

I hate pancakes! Go make me something with less calories. Preferably something that salad or with fruits. I have to maintain this body for my love.”

I scoffed and continued reading the newspaper in front of me. At that moment, Nathan chose make an entrance.

He was also half dressed, just like his mistress, wearing only a navy blue sweatpants and his toned abs were on display for everyone to see.

“Morning,” he greeted to no one in particular, as he moved towards Hannah to plant a kiss on her cheek.

It kind of reminded me of my parents, how my dad would always kiss her cheeks and wish her good morning.

What would I not give, to have my husband kiss me to wish me goodmorning, to sit at the breakfast table with my family and discuss our plans for the day, for my partner to ask me how I slept and what I dreamt of.

But even though my husband was sitting at the breakfast table with me, he wasn’t sitting by my side but by the side of his mistress, and wasn’t kissing me but her.

Hannah wrapped her arms around Nathan and kissed him full on the lips, pressing herself against him.

Part of me was telling me to get up and leave that room, but my pride wouldn’t let me do that. This was my house and my kitchen.

I could have my breakfast in my own leisurely time and not have to make it quick because of the two insufferable people.

Marie came in with coffee for Nathan and made a disgusted face at the sight of the two making out in the kitchen.

She looked at me worriedly but I gave her a reassuring smile.

“Sir, your coffee,” Marie Said causing the two to break their deep kiss.

“What would you like for breakfast?” She asked him.

“Whatever’s made,” he told her.

“Where’s my breakfast?” Hannah barked at her.

“I’m preparing you a fruit salad, mam” Marie said fearfully.

“Well make it quick,” she ordered. I didn’t like the way she was talking to Marie, especially since Marie was an older woman.

“Fruit salad baby?” Nathan asked her. “You need to eat more than that. Something more healthy and nutritious.”

“It’s fine babe,” she replied cooly. “I have to maintain my figure. I’m a model remember? It takes pain to look beautiful all the time.”

All through breakfast, they continued to show affection as they fed each other and exchanged meaningless conversations.

Nathan tried to feed her some of his breakfast but she wouldn’t eat in fears of becoming ‘too fat.’ When I carried on eating my breakfast, and Marie put more pancakes on my plate, Hannah sneered.

“Careful Hailey,” she said. “You mustn’t eat so much or you’ll put on extra weight. It’s difficult to catch men’s attention when you’re fat. No wonder you’re still single.”

“Oh yes, because starving myself to death just to pick up men is the only mission in life,” I sneered sarcastically not bothering to look up from the paper.

“And it’s quite an assumption you’re making, of me being single.”

“You have a boyfriend?” She asked surprised, putting down her fork. Even Nathan turned to look at me properly for the first time this morning.

‘Not a boyfriend, a husband’ my subconscious replied.

“Who’s it?” She pressed on when I didn’t answer.

“What is it to you?” I asked her irritated. “My civil status is not single, that’s all you need to know.”

“I was just asking, no need to be mean,” she said in a small voice but I just rolled my eyes.

“Darling, why don’t we go out for a picnic today?” Nathan asked her steering the topic away from my love life.

“We could spend some quality time together, just the two of us.

Plus I really need a break from all the stress and workload. I don’t think I’ll get another holiday in the next couple of weeks, so let’s make the best of today,” he continued.

“I don’t think today is possible,” she told him feigning a sad smile.

“Why not?”

“Sam is hosting brunch at her father’s private yacht today and I have to be there,” she said.

“But you just got back from a vacation with Sam and your friends,” Nathan protested.

“Can’t we spend today together? We might not get a chance in awhile.”

“Yes, but I also have to go to brunch. That bitch Quinn will be there. It’s the perfect opportunity for me to wear that new Gucci dress I got and rub it in her face,”

she had a malicious smile on her face as she thought about making Quinn jealous.

“Which reminds me, I have to get going,” she said standing up. “I have to make an appointment at the parlour and do my nails. Can’t go to brunch looking anything but the best.”

“You always look the best,” he told her as he kissed her deeply.

“I know. Don’t worry, I’ll call and tell you everything that happens after brunch,” she said and dashed out of the kitchen.

Now it was just the two of us. We sat there in silence, me stirring my coffee while I continued reading the newspaper and Nathan finishing his pancakes.

“So Anderson,” Nathan started after a while in silence. The fact that he still used my maiden name was proof that he didn’t accept me as his wife.

“What’s on the news?” He asked, trying to make conversation. But I was in no mood to talk to him, when his words from yesterday morning still rang in my head.

“A lot of things,” I replied curtly.

“Anything interesting?” He asked

again.

Exchanging headlines of mutual interest was something that had become common to us over the last few weeks when we were bonding.

We would discuss topics and give our insights and opinions.

It was a relief really, to share my thoughts with someone who was genuinely interested in listening.

It meant a lot to me to have that bond with my husband, where I could tell him my views on politics and business.

And I had so naively thought that it meant something to him too. However I was wrong.

“I’ll leave the paper on the table so you can read it yourself later,” I said almost rudely.

“Are you alright?” He asked. “You seem a bit off.”

“I’m fine,”

He didn’t look like he believed me, but he left it at that.

“So what are you doing today? We can continue watching season 2 of Game of Thrones,” he suggested.

“I’m busy today, I have work,” I lied. Sorry but I’m not interested in spending time with someone who doesn’t value me.

“Today’s Sunday,” Nathan pointed out.

“And I am busy all the same,” I said raising my voice slightly.

I stood up, picked up my plate and left the kitchen, with a very stunned looking Nathan behind.

———————————

I couldn’t stay in the house. I was feeling restless and angry.

Nathan’s words and actions from yesterday really hurt me.

Mostly because I had so foolishly let myself get carried away in a fantasy where we actually had a chance to be an actual couple.

I was furious at myself and Nathan. I had told him I was busy, but I had lied.

I didn’t want to spend time with him, but I wanted to get back at him for forcing me to watch his love affair with his mistress.

So I came up with a plan, sent out a text message and within a few minutes received one back.

Excited, I ran to take a shower and then got dressed in a beautiful and sexy outfit, making sure to look my best.

I took extra care with my hair, opting for a more laid back and chill hairstyle in contrast to the elegant, professional ones I usually wear.

I even went through the trouble to put on some make-up, so I could look my best. I was dressed to impress.

I walked down the stairs and found Nathan in the living room, reading the newspaper.

It was only a couple of hours after breakfast and Hannah had left the house long back, leaving Nathan all by himself on Sunday.

He looked surprised to see me all dressed up and ready to leave the house as he believed I was really working, and I was not dressed for work but for a date.

“Where are you going?” He asked me.

“Out,” came my simple reply.

“Where out?” He asked suspiciously.

“Look Nathan, as much as I’d love to sit and chit chat, I’m running late,” I told him. “I’ve got to go, bye.”

And with that, I walked out of the front door. But instead of going to the garage for my car, I walked straight down the driveway where a Mercedes convertible was waiting.

I opened the passenger seat and got into the car and greeted the person in the driver’s seat with a hug and a huge smile.

I knew Nathan was watching from the window, and had a very good view of us from where the car was parked so I made sure to put on a show for him.

Since the hood of the car was down, Nathan could clearly see Michael in the driver’s seat.

As I pulled away from the hug, I caught a glimpse of Nathan in the rear view mirror and felt satisfied that I had accomplished my mission. With that we pulled away from the driveway.

———————————

It was late in the evening by the time I returned back to the mansion.

I had truly enjoyed myself today, even though I had only planned the outing to spite Nathan.

Michael and I spent the entire morning and afternoon at his bakery and restaurants where he showed me around various Italian delicacies.

By the time we parted ways, it was safe to say my knowledge about Italy had increased seven fold.

He also told me about various places he had visited, and me being the travel enthusiast that I was listened intently.

Michael was a fun company and an amiable gentleman.

I also helped him pick out various new dishes for his restaurants. All in all, it was an enjoyable day for the both of us.

I entered the living room weary and tired, not to mention stuffed after tasting so many different dishes, to find Nathan sprawled on the couch, watching game of thrones all alone. Must have been a lonely Sunday for him.

“Back so early?” Nathan sneered as I walked in.

It was late evening, and naturally he thought that I had spent the whole time with Michael. However, I had not.

After lunch, we parted ways and I went to visit my grandparents.

They had been bumped that Nathan didn’t come along, but I told them he was busy with work and they bought it.

I hated lying to them but I had little choice.

Still, I let Nathan believe that my whole day was spent with another man, all for the sake of my revenge.

It would do him some good to be on the receiving end, for him to know what it feels like to see his spouse enjoying herself with another man.

It’s payback time. All he put me through, I would return it back to him.

“You told me you were busy today,” he accused.

“And I was,” I insisted. “I had plans with Michael.”

“Oh yeah, and it ended so soon? Should have spent more time with him, it’s still early to be back home.”

What’s he talking about, it is just passed seven. He thinks this is late? He used to come back home past midnight, after his rendezvous, what of that.

“Michael insisted I stay for the night, but I declined,” I lied smoothly. “There’s work tomorrow.”

“Such a shame,” he gritted angrily, staring down at me as he stood up and walked close.

“He must have been utterly disappointed to miss your company for the night.”

“He understood,” I replied cooly, ignoring the implications of his words.

“Oh yeah?” He folded his hands in front of his chest. “Did you invite him to our reception, next week?”

“Ofcourse I did. I think you’ve forgotten that it’s his bakery that is preparing the cake,” I reminded him.

“And did you tell him you’re married?”

“What’s it to you, Nathan?” I asked him. “But if you must know, he’s aware.

And he wants me to meet his parents on Wednesday.”

Nathan’s jaw dropped at that, and I smirked. It wasn’t a lie. Well not exactly.

Michael’s parents would be arriving from Italy tomorrow and he was hosting a small dinner party with close friends and family, to which he invited me so that I could meet his family.

It wasn’t really a big deal, just that I was one of the few friends he made in New York, since he was still new to the city.

We had gotten close enough to call each other friends, and so meeting his family as a friend shouldn’t be a big deal.

But the way I said it to Nathan, led him to think of it in another fashion, which was what I wanted.

All this time, I told him the truth that I wasn’t seeing anyone, and let him off scott free, now I would lie to him and make him suffer.

I know that seeing me with other men troubled him, and he hated Michael and I with a burning passion, so I was going to use it against him. It’s tit for tat. You get what you give.

“So you two are dating now?” He asked angrily. “And all this time you said you weren’t. How long has this been going on?”

“Look Nathan, I’ve had a long day and I’m tired now. I don’t have the energy to argue, so I’m going to bed,” I told him in a firm voice.

With that I walked off, leaving him to believe the lie that he had assumed.

Technically, I never told him I was dating Michael, he got that idea in his head all by himself and I was not going to bother to correct him.

I felt proud of myself for what I had just done. The look on his face as he stood there, was priceless.

I didn’t even feel any remorse for making him miserable and jealous.

He had it coming. I went to bed happy that night.
