TEN YEARS LATER: HOW THE LATE MILLS WAS BETRAYED BY HIS OWN COMPANIONS

John Evans Atta Mills sadly passed away ten years ago on July 24, 2012.

After two failed attempts, the late John Evans Atta Mills became the President of Ghana on January 7, 2009 on the NDC ticket.

Unfortunately, his administration became ephemeral when he mysteriously left the earth to the utter astonishment of the good people of Ghana.

But strangely, the Mahama administration was in power for over four years after the demise and burial of the late President Mills and could not be bothered to look after the tomb of our former president.

If you recall, some years ago some members of the late Mills family lamented the appalling condition of the late President Mills mausoleum popularly known as Asomdwee Park.

But for Koku Anyido's constant lobbying and the foresight of the Akufo-Addo administration, the Mills Mausoleum would have been used as a dumping ground.

Koku Anyidoho definitely kept his trust in the late Mills and it is a testament to his undying love and admiration for the late professor.

Even though I knew deep in my heart that the former NDC Deputy Secretary General and Director of Communications in the late Mills administration, Koku Anyidoho, had an unbridled devotional affection for the late President Mills, my faith grew exponentially when Koku aptly devised and established a constitution in memory of Mills .

Before Koku Anyido's altruistic and conscious decision to establish the Atta Mills Institute, there was consensus among the vast majority of observers that the late President Mills was neglected by Ghanaians, including his own (Umbrella fraternity).

Then some of us, as a matter of honour, were extremely disheartened to read that the grave of the late Professor John Evans Atty Mills was in a deplorable state for years under the management of the NDC.

Sometime in 2017, Citi News reported that the tomb's well-crafted metal cover had developed grim cracks that were apparently separating from the rest of the artifact.

The report further revealed that parts of the tomb were also crumbling and park administrators had to prop it up with blocks.

However, it is gratifying that it barely took the Akufo-Addo administration a few months in office to commence renovation work on the dilapidated tomb of the late Mills.

Following Citi FM's report on the deteriorating condition of the tomb of the late President John Evans, Atty Mills, the NPP administration has commenced repairs to the tomb at Asomdwee Park.

Koku Anyidoho had this to say: “I can confirm on authority that I was there and I must say that we are delighted with the prompt response of the government. We saw the workers on site.

"The tombstone was being worked on. It also looks like the lawn itself is being groomed,” said Koku Anyidoho (modernghana.com, 03/01/2017).

In fact, it is with deep sadness that the late Mills was let down by some individuals (especially the Mahama administration) and people who claim to love him so much.

If we look back, the late President Mills contested the presidency in three consecutive elections on the NDC ticket before winning the ultimate power in the 2008 run-off election.

Despite fierce opposition from the NDC group, the indefatigable President Mills stood his ground and chose John Dramani Mahama as his running mate for the 2008 elections.

Suffice to point out that the late President Mills was doing his best until his sudden and inexplicable death on July 24, 2012.

Of course, the late Mills was not without wrongdoing. He had both perfections and imperfections. Yet his light shone among the greedy NDC apparatchiks.

The late Mills was clearly not on the side of corruption and as a result made more enemies than friends in the NDC.

It is on record that before Wayoma's scandalous debt repayment judgment, the late Mills warned the "create, loot and share" cabal not to make payments, yet the conspiratorial conspirators defied good old Mills' orders and gave away a staggering sum to Wayome who had no contract with the Government of Ghana.

So it would appear that there was bad blood between the late Mills and some NDC officials.

For if that was not the case, how on earth would the NDC government leave the grave of one of its own in such a hideous state?

The alleged enmity between the late Mills and the party's top brass may explain why they did not even subtly acknowledge his achievements in their much-touted Green Paper.

It would appear that the NDC apparatchiks are being ungrateful to the men and women who have worked hard to put the party on the map.

NDC apparatchiks are truly ungrateful. Take, for example, the party's General Secretary, Johnson Asieda Nketio, whom the late Rawlings converted and baptized into the Umbrella Brotherhood, once calling him a barking dog too old and frail to contribute meaningfully to the cause of the party. he (Rawlings) founded and signed with his blood.

Moreover, the boisterous brats of the NDC (sharp-toothed children) who are not privy to their party's history have constantly chastised former President Rawlings for voicing his outrage at the rot in his party.

The spirit of the late Mills will take solace in the fact that his true comrade Koku Anyidoho stood by him through thick and thin.

More power to the elbow, trusted comrade Koku Anyido; the ghost of the late Mills is truly proud of you.
