Former Aful Nkwanta assemblyman Lawrence Adu has vowed to expose the Ashanti regional minister over alleged rambo-style decisions that he says are undermining NPP's political fortunes in the region.
In an interview with ModernGhana News, he said that Hon Simon Osei Mensah has not achieved excellence since he assumed office.
He claimed that people in the region "are mad at him" because of his inaction.
Lawrence Adu said this while reacting to the unfolding events at the Bosome Freho District Assembly; the arrest of three assembly members namely Hon Mary Mensah (Anyaaso Constituency), Hon Degraft Maxwell (Mmorontuo Constituency) and Hon Joseph Nketia (Government Agent).
In a press briefing held on Thursday July 21, 2022 by a group called Former Ashanti Regional Assembly Members – JE Committee, they claimed that the arrest of the trio was carried out by the District Chief Executive for Bosome Freho in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Minister Hon. Simon Osei Mensah.
They made further allegations that it was the regional minister who sent macho men from Kumasi to “physically assault and assault harmless members of the congregation” and subsequently pepper sprayed them.
The group explained that the above events provoked the members of the congregation to confront the macho men by throwing chairs, which was the only weapon they had at their disposal in self-defence.
On the sidelines, Peeved Lawerence Adu a.k.a “Chief” told the media that this has always been the regional minister’s style.
“He did it in the region and I can give several examples... He did a similar thing at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium this year when the NPP had its regional delegate congress.
"This is just the beginning. We will go out to expose him for his inaction affecting the party in the Ashanti region. We will expose him big time and I will do it," he vows.
The former assemblyman said he will be very disappointed with President Akufo-Addo if he does not remove the regional minister over his failure to release the arrested assemblymen from Bosom Freho district.
Briefing the media, the spokesperson of the group, Nana Kofi Senya, disclosed that the DCE also threatened the presiding member and six other members of the assembly with arrest “which is in stark contrast to the principles, norms and provisions of the local Government Act, 2016 (Act 936 ), section 216 (1), which; "there shall be freedom of speech, discussion and action in every district assembly and such freedom shall not be impeached or questioned in any court or venue".
According to him, Section 217(1) also states that "No civil or criminal action shall be instituted against a member of a district council or an officer of a district council in any court for anything said by that person in the district council." or any thing or matter which such person presents to the District Council by petition, motion or otherwise among others”.
