Douglas Mitchell, a former Canadian soccer league player who later became the Commissioner of League and Lawyer and Leader of the Leading Calgary Society, died on Wednesday at the age of 83 years.
Mitchell played briefly at CFL with B.C. Lions and Hamilton Tiger-Cats and then served as League Commissioners for five years in the 1980s. He also spent time at the League Board of Governors, as a representative of Calgary Stampeders, as well as many other achievements in sports and a wider community.
Among the people he loved, he left his wife, former Lieutenant Governor Alberta Lois Mitchell.
His family said in the email shared on Thursday that Mitchell died peacefully and suddenly at home.
"We all know that Doug is an inspiration for everyone who knows him and we will continue to share his inheritance every day," Lois Mitchell said in an email.
"Doug lives a very happy, accomplished, and fulfilling life in 83 years. Doug makes the impression on each of us and we find consolation in knowing his lives full of joy. We know he wants us all to live with strength, purpose and laughter."
Among the many awards, he was appointed to the Canadian order in 2004, was inaugurated to Alberta Order of Excellence in 2007, inaugurated in the Hall of Fame of Canadian Sports in 2019 and the most recently inaugurated in the Hall of Canadian Football Fame in the Moon June.
Mitchell spoke in Toronto on October 23, 2019, when he was appointed into the Hall of Fame of Canadian Sports. Among many other awards, Mitchell was appointed to the Canadian order in 2004, was inaugurated to Alberta Order of Excellence in 2007 and was inaugurated to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in June. He represented Calgary Flames as Governor of the National Hockey League, sitting as Chair of the Canadian Athletics Foundation and the Board of Governor of the South Alberta Institute of Technology.
Mitchell is the Chairperson of the National Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG) and diligent sports fan firm.
