New Manchester United coach Erik Ten Hag told Captain Harry Maguire on Friday that it was up to him to win fans by performing better.

The Dutchman also said that he was still in the market for new players and needed "more choices," with United Chasing midfielder Barcelona Frenkie de Jong.

Ten Hag had been in United during the Asian and Australian pre -season tour, but made Maguire as a captain even though the British central defender fought last year and was ridiculed by fans.

Jeering has followed the 29-year-old player to Australia, where Maguire was targeted by a handful of fans in their 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace in Melbourne.

"We heard," Ten Hag told reporters in Perth in front of United's friendship against Aston Villa on Saturday.

"But you see, if you appear, it slows down. It's about how we can change it.

"The team and Harry can appear, and that is the only focus."

United have impressed in their first match under Ten Hag's discipline with a convincing friendly victory over Liverpool, Melbourne Victory, and Palace.

Games Attacking them - Ajax's distinctive features during the reign of Ten Hag - have caused new trust ahead of the new Premier League season after finishing which disappointed sixth last season.

The Red Devils are likely to start a campaign without Cristiano Ronaldo, who has not reported back to the preseason after asking to leave Old Trafford. He lost the tour because of "family problems."

"Of course. But about maybe not the right word," Ten Hag said when asked if he was worried about Ronaldo's absence.

"I focus on the players there. They do it very well, they are in good condition.

"I prefer to focus on it and develop it. I can't wait for him to come in, then we will integrate it."

When Ronaldo's drama was played on the background, United intended to strengthen their troops before the transfer window was closed on September 1.

United have signed left back Tyrell Malacia, central defender Lisandro Martinez and playmaker Christian Eriksen but seems to need a central midfielder and attacker.

"We sign Eriksen for the midfield department, so we are very happy with it," Ten Hag said.

"We need more options where you have a good team, and this is not just about the team, you need a good squad to get the right results at the end of the season.

"So we have to strengthen more troops and we look, but we also need the right players.
