In an effort to clarify the GH1 levy, the police shoot at an Aboboyaa rider.
After shots were fired by the police on Friday afternoon, residents and drivers in various areas of Ho in the Volta Region were left in shock.
A tricycle operator allegedly refused to pay a daily tax of GH1 per rider, causing the Ho Municipal Assembly and the Municipal Police Command's routine of collecting income to become chaotic.
Some eyewitnesses claimed that the tricycle driver sped past the revenue collection site because he was alleged to have previously made a payment.
Due to the rider's actions, the police started after him and opened fire to try and stop the driver.
Mahama Canboo [tricycle] riders were passing by when all of a sudden, some police started pursuing one particular rider.
"Immediately after that, shots were fired in the direction of the tricycle, forcing the rider to get off. He began pleading and said he had already paid. Even the main road can see where the bullet struck the ground. One woman described how onlookers flocked to the scene to aid the driver.
Another bystander claimed that the rider was dragged from the trike by the police.
"The biker was pleading with the police as he was on his knees. People were on the street and in nearby businesses when the incident occurred, which shocked me. I had to confront them and tell the cops that he should not have fired in the middle of a crowd.
"He might have hurt some pedestrians. The cyclist is not a robber with a gun. He had to address this matter in a professional manner as a licensed police officer. Police must locate the registration number and make arrests, but they may not fire their weapons.
