Focus on 'finishing the 8' instead of ‘breaking the 8’ - Ayariga bares teeth at NPP.
Dr Hassan Ayariga, founder and leader of the All People's Congress (APC) party, has urged the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to abandon its obsession with winning the 2024 elections, dubbed "break the 8."
Dr. Hassan Ayariga lamented the country's difficult economic times in an interview broadcast on Angel FM on July 22, 2022.
He claimed that both the ruling party and the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), had failed to create an economy that served the best interests of citizens.
In assessing the country's problems, he stated, "Our problem is corruption, mismanagement, and stealing."
He bemoaned the fact that Ghanaians had always voted the NDC and NPP into power and urged the electorate to give him a chance to lead.
Ayariga urged all institutions to strike in response to the economic downturn and corruption in government.
The APC leader was responding to the government's decision to contact the International Monetary Fund about a program.
"Everything is on strike. Because the government is so corrupt. Because they are not doing the right thing, all institutions must go on strike. "If you're doing the right thing, the Ghanaians will sympathize," he said.
In response to the suggestion that his call will cause chaos, he stated, "That is why I am saying they should stop talking about breaking the 8 and start talking about finishing the 8." I've made a significant statement. Completing the 8 is difficult.
"People will go on strike if you don't manage well." People go on strike when the price of goods rises and does not correspond to their salary. What do you think people will do if everything is haphazard? The conflict between Ukraine and Russia should not be our concern. The Covid-19 pandemic was even a blessing for Ghana because it brought us so much money. We were unable to save lives. People were still killed. We received a large sum of money as a result of Covid-19, but the level of corruption consumed the funds," he added.
The NPP recently elected new executives who were tasked with "breaking the 8."
Amid its quest, the government is confronted with economic challenges which has compelled it to seek an International Monetary Fund programme.
Opposition NDC has lampooned the government over the decision and looks set to capitalize on the economic crunch in the election year come 2024.
