By this point you probably know not to clean your ears with a cotton swab. Earwax is actually a good thing and "a sign of a healthy ear," according to Maura Cosetti, director of the Ear Institute at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai.
But what if you notice a change in the color of your earwax?Or do you feel like your ear is covered? Just because earwax is a necessary (and healthy) thing doesn't mean that certain problems or changes in earwax can't mean something is wrong. Here, experts share when earwax can signal a problem.
Your Earwax Is Probably Fine
Between cotton swabs and candles, earwax gets a bad rap. But Jason A.Brant, an assistant professor of otolaryngology, head and neck surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, emphasizes that your earwax is probably fine the way it is.

"For the vast majority of people, earwax isn't a problem and doesn't need to be removed," says Brant.
In general, wax does not mean that the ears are dirty. In fact, it is an integral part of how the ear canals function.
“[The] wax has many excellent properties.It has a lubricant and we believe it has antimicrobial and even antifungal properties,” he says. "Earwax in general helps with overall ear health," says Cosetti.
