The afternoon storms caused that the beginning of the third round of 2022 3M open was moved, and with it arrived ideal score conditions for competitors. Without a wind of wind to speak, accessible pin locations and a shortening box yardage, numerous players took advantage of the moving day on TPC Twin Cities. Unfortunately for the field, this included Scott Piercy, who ordered a three -stroke advantage to start the third round and stretched it to four after a round of 5 under 66.
The 43 -year -old made the pair in the first two holes and then took out five consecutive Birdies to reach 18 under him, extending his advantage to four blows to Emiliano Grillo. Clearly, in the middle of one of those weeks during which everything that can go well, it goes well, the only thing that could stop Piercy was Mother Nature and a blister at the bottom of him.
The planned thunderstorms arrived a little earlier than imagined, and all the players were taken from the golf course when the final group stepped on the eighth hole. After six hours and 38 minutes, the game finally resumed.
At one point arriving at 19 below, a ghost in the last Piercy dropped 18 below, where the resumption of the game began. While he has seen his leadership grow on Grillo, there are still many worthy contestants in the fight, including Tony Finau's favorite before the tournament, only five blows.
Leader
1. Scott Piercy (-18): The man who led after Thursday and Friday will lead after Saturday and also with a third round 5 under 66. To say that this performance came out of nowhere would be a euphemism, since Piercy entered the 3M open with only two Finals Top-20 in the season and having lost four of their last six cuts.
Starting the week outside the Top 125 of the Fedex Cup classification, Piercy will catapult within the top 50 if he can endure. Seven years have passed since his last individual victory and the nerves may have gotten into his hole 18 on Saturday when he threw his focus on the water, which finally led Bogey. If those persist tomorrow, this tournament will become a completely different game.
Other contestants
2. Emiliano Grillo (-14)
T3. Doug Ghim and Tony Finau (-13)
5. Tom Hoge (-12)
T6. Sungjae IM and Greyson Sigg (-11)
Piercy's advantage seems to be unsurpassed, and although conventional wisdom suggests that Grillo is the candidate to pursue him, Finaou can be the wisest election. Having a lot of fire power in its own right, the two -time winner at the PGA Tour has been incredible from Tee to Green during the first three days on TPC Twin Cities. Unfortunately, Finaou has not been able to match this excellence in the Greens. If he does tomorrow, he should have a realistic opportunity to scare Piercy.
Implications of the Fedex Cup to monitor
It feels like yesterday that the PGA Tour was in Hawaii to start the 2021-22 season. In the blink of an eye, there are only two tournaments left after the end of the 3M open. Encapsulating the importance of a position for the end of the season, it is projected that Piercy will move from 138 in the career of the whole season to 46 with a victory.
While Piercy can move to the second playoffs event, others hope to reach the first. Chesson Hadley, the 125th player of last year, is scheduled to make a similar movement from 143 to 127º, while the former day of the Jason No. 1 of the world is expected to drop some places to No. 125. when seeing the final round includes Patton Kizzire, Tyler Duncan and Matthias Schwab, since they are inside the postseason bubble.
