Mamprobi Police have arrested Henry Teye Adjirackor, a technician, for illegally owning, selling, and installing meters and passing them off as Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) meters.
The suspect was arrested after field surveillance officers from the Korle Bu District Office’s ECG cut power to some users of the illegal meters. When questioned, the customers named the suspect as the source of the measuring devices. They claimed that the self-proclaimed meter supplier sold the illegal meters to unsuspecting members of the public.

Speaking to the media, ECG Korle-Bu District Manager Solomon Tsawe described the suspect as part of a syndicate whose modus operandi was to duplicate existing meter data already installed for customers, print a sheet, and put the information on lay the face of the illegal counter.
“These criminal acts not only deny ECG the necessary revenue from the service we provide but also pose a security risk to customers because the quality and safety of these illegal meters have not been verified,” he said.
ECG’s Accra West General Manager. Ebenezer Ghunney cautioned customers to contact ECG officials directly for any meter-related service requests. “Any time you make an official payment and you are not issued an official EKG receipt, that should be your first indication that you are likely to be scammed or engaged in an illegal activity,” he added.
Mr. Ghunney advised clients to contact one of the ECG offices to clarify any doubts and seek clarity about any issues.
The ECG has launched a nationwide campaign to reduce losses through a moratorium on customers involved in illegal connections or with erroneous meters. Customers not receiving bills and customers not purchasing prepaid cards are also advised to contact the nearest ECG office for immediate action.
Police investigations arrest other named members of this criminal syndicate.
