Brentford Sign Ex-Burnley Defender Ben Mee

Text size Brentford have signed former Burnley captain Ben Mee on a free transfer after agreeing a two-year-deal with the defender. The 32-year-old left Burnley when his contract expired following their relegation from the Premier League last season. Brentford boss Thomas Frank said the centre-back would add "quality and experience" to his squad. "I really love his defensive mindset," he said. "He knows how to defend the box, he knows how to block a shot and he knows how to win duels. "He will bring leadership and communication to the team, which is very attractive. "He has a very good left foot and will be very good for us on set-pieces in both boxes. I am looking forward to adding him to the squad." Mee, who played almost 400 times for Burnley over an 11-year period, is Brentford's fourth signing of the transfer window, joining Aaron Hickey, Keane Lewis-Potter and Thomas Strakosha in west London. Back in the top flight after a 74-year absence, Brentford finished 13th in the Premier League table last term. jw/smg/jc The Barron's news department was not involved in the creation of the content above. Brentford are closing in on the signing of 32-year-old central defender Ben Mee on a free transfer this summer, according to a report. Mee left Burnley at the end of the 2021-22 campaign upon the expiration of his contract at Turf Moor, having spent 11 years at the club following his move from Manchester City. The veteran was unable to help Burnley in their bid for survival in the top flight towards the end of last season, after picking up an injury against Leicester City on March 1. The Englishman helped caretaker boss Mike Jackson in a supporting role on the touchline for the remaining couple of months, but is now set to return to his role on the field with Brentford, according to The Athletic. It had emerged on Wednesday that the Bees were in talks to sign the free agent ahead of the 2022-23 campaign, and after reportedly agreeing personal terms, Mee looks set for a move to West London according to the report.
