Gilfred Asiamah, a research analyst at the CDD-Ghana, has urged the government and other state institutions to address the public's opinion of them in regard to corruption.
He claims that the 2021 Ghana Integrity of Public Services Survey report demonstrates a rising mistrust of public servants and institutions among the populace, which is detrimental to the democracy of the nation.
According to Ghanaians' perceptions, the police, the president's office, members of parliament, and judges and magistrates are the most corrupt institutions in the nation, according to the 2021 Ghana Integrity of Public Services Survey.
In response to the findings, he stated, "I think corruption, as has been highlighted again, has a very detrimental effect in terms of public trust and confidence in critical institutions. And some of the institutions we're discussing are the foundations of our democratic system of government.
Therefore, if we don't address how people perceive some of these institutions, it might have a negative impact on how we govern and even how people view our democracy.
The majority of Ghanaians still want democracy, he continued, but they are typically growing more and more unsatisfied with how it is implemented in the nation.
And if you examine the facts, you'd see that while people prefer a democracy because that's what they want for themselves, they aren't as satisfied with it as they once were. It has been becoming smaller over time.
And some of these, he continued, "explain why people are not satisfied with how democracy functions because they believe that those who have the opportunity to be at the centre of affairs tend to benefit more than they the ordinary people, and that's why you see these high levels of perception of corruption and low trust in these institutions."
So, in order for them to be aware of their duties as public officials and cognizant of promoting integrity as they provide their service to the populace, he has advocated for training and retraining of public officials on ethical standards and levels of integrity.
