Soon after President Nana Akufo-Addo revoked the appointment of Sarah Adwoa Safo as Ghana's Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection on Thursday, July 29, some social media users have already started a campaign to get her replaced.

One name that has come up strongly is former Upper East Regional Minister and New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2020 parliamentary candidate for Navrongo Central Constituency, Abayage Tangoba.

The right person for the job

Those rooting for her to be named the next minister in a ministry that has been without a substantive minister for almost a year are convinced she is the best candidate for the job.

Some cited her love of children, a trait demonstrated by the annual children's party she hosts in her constituency. Some also say this trait is evident in her new venture – the establishment of a private nursery school – Tangoba Legends School – in the Upper East Regional Capital of Bolgatanga.

Some also say her campaign ahead of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections has been heavy on protecting the interests of the vulnerable in society - especially children and women, widows and the elderly.

They believe they put her in a better position to lead the ministry, which is mandated by law to "coordinate and ensure gender equality and equity, promote the survival, social protection and development of children, the vulnerable and excluded and people with disabilities and integrate their rights, empowerment and full participation in national development.

She seems to be up for the job, as her response to one of the posts shows that she's got it.

Some went so far as to send private messages to the president asking him to consider Tangoba for the position.

Surprisingly, he is gaining support on both sides of the political divide.

About Tangoba

She was Ghana's ambassador to Italy before being appointed Upper East Regional Minister in 2018. In 2020, she defeated then incumbent MP and then Aviation Minister Joseph Kofi Adda in the NPP parliamentary primary to contest the Navrongo Central seat, which she eventually lost to Sampson Tangombu Chiragia of the National Democratic Congress.

The official minister continues

In a letter dated Thursday July 29 canceling the appointment of Sarah Adwoa Safo, Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah was instructed to continue as caretaker minister until a substantive minister is appointed. However, it is not clear when the substantive minister will be appointed.
