Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta says a review of the free senior secondary school policy remains an option.
He made the revelation on Joynews' PM Express, where he explained that the Education Minister is looking at policy to understand how parents can be included in a non-coercive manner.
According to him, revision is always on the table. And this is just to make sure that adequate education is provided and that waste is eliminated to achieve value for money.
In its sixth year of implementation, major players in the education sector and some politicians have called for a review of the free SHS program to relieve the government of the financial burden it currently poses.
Despite the government's reluctance to revise the policy, it was revealed that it was being considered, according to the finance minister, but he gave no timetable.
“If we have maybe scholarship programs, then that means you're going to have to show you need the funding. We can be very sophisticated in this to ensure that we get parents who are not cohesive and do not compromise the ability of citizens under 18 to access education.”
“We wouldn't be sitting here if it weren't for education, and that's really the human capital we need. Effectiveness will therefore be investigated. Finally, when you look at education in the budget, Senior High School is not in the tip. But we certainly look at efficiency in every system and look for ways to make it more efficient.”
The finance minister responded to the host's definitive question as to whether the review was in order or not.
