Luis Suarez set to sign for Nacional after reaching agreement with boyhood club

Luis Suarez has announced he is in line for a return to boyhood club Nacional after reaching a pre-contract agreement with the Uruguayan side. Suarez, 35, left Atletico Madrid at the end of last season upon the expiration of his deal at the Wanda Metropolitano. The former Barcelona striker was considered by Premier League club Aston Villa and linked with a move to MLS, but has ultimately chosen to return to Nacional, where he began his career. Suarez confirmed his new club on Tuesday with a post on social media. “First of all, I want to thank everyone for the love that myself and my family have received in the last few days,” he said. “It’s been incredible and emotional, all of the videos and messages that we’ve received. That really touched our hearts at a time when we had to make a decision. “So, it was (impossible) to reject this opportunity and return to Nacional. We have a pre-contract with the club and we hope that in the next few hours we can finalize details and reach the agreement that we all want. “I hope to enjoy this new stage (of my career) and I hope to see you all soon.” Suarez came through the ranks at Nacional, before making his first-team debut aged 18 in 2005. He scored 10 goals in 27 league matches as Nacional won the Uruguayan Primera Division, then moving to Europe with Groningen in the Netherlands. Suarez spent one year with Groningen before joining Ajax. His impressive form during his three and a half seasons at the Dutch giants earned him a move to Liverpool, where he continued to excel. The Uruguay international scored 82 goals in 132 matches for Liverpool, then enjoying six highly successful seasons with Barcelona. Amid Barcelona’s financial crisis, Suarez joined La Liga rivals Atletico, where he won the Spanish title in 2020-21. On the international stage, Suarez has won 132 caps for Uruguay and is their all-time top scorer with 68 goals. GO DEEPER Luis Suarez's last hurrah at Atletico Madrid (Photo: Getty Images)

Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez returns to Nacional after 17 years

Former Liverpool striker and Uruguay’s all-time leading goalscorer Luis Suarez has returned to the club he made his debut with 17 years ago. The 35-year-old striker announced the news on Twitter, a day after he told fans he had reached a pre-agreement with Nacional in Montevideo. On Wednesday, Suarez said the deal was official and he changed his social media profile to one of himself wearing the white, blue and red of Nacional. “I am proud to wear my shirt again at @Nacional!” Suarez wrote on Twitter. “Thank you all for the support! SEE YOU SOON.” Nacional also confirmed Suarez’s return to the club where he began his professional career in 2005 but did not disclose the financial details or the length of the contract. “Happy to have you home!” the team wrote in response to Suarez’s post. He had been competing in LaLiga since 2014, with a long spell at Barcelona followed by two seasons with Atletico Madrid. The striker is the Uruguayan national team’s all-time leading scorer, with 68 goals in 132 games. He went on to win the League Cup in his first full season. In 2014, he equalled the goalscoring record for a 38-game Premier League season and won his first European Golden Shoe. That summer he moved to Barcelona in a transfer worth £64.98 million.
