Ronaldo announces return of ‘the king’ as Merson urges Man Utd to ‘draw the line and get rid’
Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that he will play for Manchester United against Rayo Vallecano in a friendly.
Ronaldo has been AWOL throughout pre-season despite scoring 24 goals in all competitions during the 2021/22 season.
Man United's failure to qualify for the Champions League certainly irritated the attacker, who has been linked with a move away from the club this summer.
Ronaldo defiantly dismissed claims that he wants to leave on Friday after no one shown interest in him.His contract does not expire until 2023, and he is expected to stay with the club for Erik ten Hag's first season as manager.
Man United play Rayo Vallecano in their final preseason friendly on Sunday. According to Fabrizio Romano, Ronaldo stated on Instagram: "Sunday, the king plays."
Merson, an ex-Arsenal player who often criticized Ronaldo last season, believes Manchester United would be better off moving the 37-year-old this summer:
"Manchester United must draw the line and release Cristiano Ronaldo." "The tale must come to a close sooner rather than later," Merson wrote for The Daily Star."He's already told you what he wants, so why hold on to him?" He won't be sitting at home doing nothing, but he hasn't played football in over a year and is already 37. Every footballer will tell you that the only way to get in shape is to play football matches, which is why pre-season friendlies are held.
"I'm not sure how the supporters will react now that he's made it crystal known that he wants to depart." Nobody wants him, so he's in limbo. United would have liked it if he had gone, of course they would, but that's how you do it. The supporters will go crazy if they just say'see you later, Ronaldo.'""Their striker is 37, that's not very good recruitment," he remarked. You're also appointing Erik ten Hag as a manager for the long haul; you're not simply bringing him in for a year or two.
"So, if he has a plan, you've got to get started right immediately." Whatever happens, Ronaldo will not be playing next season. Even if he is, he is a year older. This game is becoming increasingly fast, thus I believe United should get a new center-forward on the transfer market."
