Klopp Offered Liverpool Midfield Solution After “Should Be Starting” Claim
Liverpool’s friendly against Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday night ended in frustration and a 1-0 defeat, but there is always something positive to be taken from pre-season matches.
So while Darwin Nunez was hooked at half-time, having spurned a few presentable opportunities, Jurgen Klopp will prefer to look on the bright side of things. With the Community Shield on the horizon against Manchester City this weekend, he has taken his players through a gruelling training regime in Austria and has options all over the pitch.
The first half of the Salzburg game was given over to fringe players and youngsters. Klopp gave them the stage to impress and asked for their best auditions – and, despite defeat, he got some eye-catching performances.
Isaac Mabaya was enterprising from right-back, Stefan Bajcetic was tidy on the ball and Fabio Carvalho was bright and forward-thinking. But for many Liverpool fans watching it was Harvey Elliott who caught the eye, both on and off the pitch.
Elliott holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Reds fans. He joined Liverpool way back in 2019 from Fulham as a 16-year-old with much hype behind him. And while he came good on that promise during the 2020/21 season, with seven goals and 11 assists in 41 games for Blackburn in the Championship, he is yet to fully blossom in a Liverpool shirt.
That is a hugely exciting prospect – and one which so nearly came into force last season, only for the cruellest of ankle injuries to strike in September when he was just beginning to show signs that his flashes of talent were forming into something more consistent.
