Extend SIM card reregistration until the queue is cleared, says Kofi Bentil.
Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Africa, has urged Ghanaian authorities to reconsider the July 31 deadline for SIM card reregistration.
He claimed that the current system was poorly designed and inefficient, citing long lines at various registration centers across the country.
He wishes to address the queue situation while postponing the deadline.
"The problem isn't that people don't want to register Sims. The system is inefficient and poorly designed. For months, there have been long lines at centers. EXTEND IT UNTIL THE QUEUES ARE OVER!! Then you'll know who isn't registering," Kofi Bentil wrote on his Facebook page.
With less than 48 hours until the SIM cards are deactivated, Ghanaians are racing against the clock to reregister them with Ghana Card.
In the midst of the race against time, many people, including the minority in Parliament, have called for an extension of the deadline because a large portion of the population lacks the Ghana card.
The government, particularly the Communications Ministry, has come under fire after sector minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful insisted that the deadline would not be extended once it expired.
Meanwhile, she is scheduled to speak at a press conference on the topic of "connectivity and access in a secure environment" on Sunday, July 31 at 12 p.m.
Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekuful is expected to take advantage of the opportunity to address the July 31 deadline.
