Tottenham’s Joe Rodon joins Rennes on season-long loan

Joe Rodon has joined Rennes on a season-long loan with an option to make the move permanent (Michael Regan/PA) (PA Archive) Joe Rodon has left Tottenham for Rennes on loan for the 2022-23 season, with an option to join the Ligue 1 side on a permanent basis. The 24-year-old defender made nine appearances in all competitions for Spurs last campaign, and will look to earn more playing time with the French outfit ahead of Wales’ historic World Cup appearance – their first since 1958. The Swansea native was a critical cog in Wales’ qualifying campaign and has earned 27 caps for his national side, who sealed their tickets to Qatar with a play-off victory over Ukraine in June. Rodon has appeared 24 times for Spurs since joining from Swansea in October 2020 and will be familiar with his new club having played against them in the Europa Conference League last September.

'Keep an eye on that': Alasdair Gold suggests signing Tottenham could now make after Joe Rodon's exit

Journalist Alasdair Gold has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur could move towards signing another defender after allowing Joe Rodon to leave the club. Rodon completed a move to French outfit Stade Rennais yesterday and will spend a season on loan in Ligue 1. And in his latest YouTube video, Gold suggested that Spurs could now make a defensive signing after the Welshman’s exit. Antonio Conte has already brought in one centre-back after adding Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan but could now look to further bolster the position. Photo by Visionhaus/Getty Images Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold thinks Spurs could now step-up their attempts to bring in another centre-back after Rodon’s exit and Japhet Tanganga’s possible departure. Speaking in his latest YouTube video, he said: “Japhet Tanganga, there was that interest from Milan. It will be interesting to see whether that goes. “And like I’ve said, certainly if both Rodon and Tanganga have ended up going out of the club, but I wonder even just with Rodon, I think they’ll go for another centre-back. “So, keep an eye on that in the remaining month of the window.” Photo by Tottenham Hotspur FC/Tottenham Hotspur FC via Getty Images Tangnga has been heavily linked with a move to Serie A champions AC Milan this summer, with Spurs and Milan reportedly restarting talks yesterday. After Rodon’s exit, if Tanganga does complete a switch to Italy it could leave Conte a slightly short in the centre-back position. The Italian currently has Eric Dier, Cristian Romero, Ben Davies, Davinson Sanchez and Lenglet for three centre-back places. And this means that Conte could yet make another defensive signing in the remaining month of the transfer window. Tottenham have most recently been linked with a move for Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic while the club are also said to be keeping an eye on Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar. It seems that Spurs could be in the market again for another central defender this summer as the club look to bolster Conte’s defensive options. Have something to tell us about this article?
