Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has stressed the need of Ghanaians continuing to live in peace and redoubling their efforts to do so.
He thinks that Ghana's prominence in both continental and international peace rankings is a result of the long-term tolerance of people of different religions. Speaking at the beginning of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana (EPCG175th )'s anniversary festivities in Accra on Sunday, July 31, 2022, Bawumia used himself as an example of how various religions can coexist.
He revealed having a Methodist mother when he was young and actively participating in a Methodist Boys' organisation. Everything was different once his mother, Susana Mariama, returned to Islam, the religion her husband practised.
In our society, a woman and some of her children may be Christians, while a father and some of his children may be Muslims. I was born to a Methodist mother (then Susana Mariama) and a Muslim father in Tamale, where I attended Sakasaka Primary School as a small kid.
"When I was a child, I actively participated in the Methodist Boys' Brigade, until my mother converted to Islam. I believe I am the only Muslim Boy's Brigade member. Nine of my seventeen siblings are Christians and eight are Muslims as of this writing. That is the charm of Ghana's embrace of all religions, he said.
Bawumia lost his mother, Hajia Mariama Bawumia, in September 2021. At the age of 81, she died in Accra and was buried next to her husband at Kperiga, in the Northeast Region, close to Walewale.
Ghana does well in the GPI 2022 rating.
Only the island nation of Mauritius was recognised as having a more tranquil country in sub-Saharan Africa last month. This is supported by the Global Peace Index (GPI) report's 2022 edition, which was published this week. Ghana was ranked as the 40th most peaceful nation in the world out of 163 nations, with an overall score of 1.759 compared to 1.715 in 2021.
According to the worldwide ranking, Ghana fell two spots from the 38th position in 2021. According to the 2021 international rankings, Ghana is positioned between Kuwait and Albania.
The Gambia, which ranks 45th internationally, Botswana, which ranks 48, and Sierra Leone, which ranks 50, round out the top five most peaceful nations in Africa.
Bawumia's comments on the rankings
"This is a tremendous achievement that must be zealously maintained without any exceptions. The topic of peace is heavily emphasised in both the Bible and the Quran.
And it is encouraging to observe that Ghana has such a religiously accepting and accepted culture that it is simple for a Christian priest to worship with Muslims and vice versa, to the extent where a Muslim Chief Imam might do so.
