Liverpool's forward has agreed to a long-term contract extension

Diogo Jota has scored 34 goals in 85 appearances since joining Liverpool from Wolves in the summer of 2020; the Portugal international has had his five-year contract extended and improved since arriving at Anfield.

Diogo Jota, a Liverpool forward, has signed a long-term contract extension with the club.

The new contract for the 25-year-old, who has scored 34 goals in 85 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Wolves in the summer of 2020, is expected to last until 2027.

Following the departure of Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich, Jota joins fellow Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah in signing a new contract with the club this summer.

"Well, I have to say, [I'm] really proud," Jota said after signing his new contract with Liverpoolfc.com.

"Obviously, I've established myself as an important player in this team since I arrived two years ago - that's what I wanted from the start."

"Signing a new long-term contract is obviously proof of the club's belief in myself as a player." It's obviously very important for me to establish that I'll be here for a while."

Jota has missed Liverpool's preseason games and Saturday's Community Shield win over Manchester City due to a hamstring injury sustained while playing for Portugal in June.

Jurgen Klopp praised his Liverpool team after their 3-1 Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

He confirmed that he will be out for "a few more weeks," ruling him out of Saturday's Premier League opener against newly promoted Fulham and the following matchday's clash with Crystal Palace at Anfield.

"Unfortunately for me, I had an upset in this pre-season because I got injured [in] the final game of the season while playing with Portugal," Jota explained. "So, as I was returning in this pre-season, I felt it a little bit again. So, I'd say it'll be a few more weeks."

When Liverpool paid Wolves £45 million to sign Diogo, some people were surprised.

The striker was a one-in-three man at Molineux, but since moving to Anfield, he has increased his scoring rate to become an integral part of the Reds' forward line, scoring 34 goals in 85 games across all competitions, including 24 in the Premier League, with four assists.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admires Jota's versatility, with the Portugal international - who, despite his 5ft 10in height, has proven to be one of the best headers in the Premier League - capable of playing through the middle as a traditional No 9, or on the left side of the attack.
