Romano claims free agent striker is nearing move after Celtic backed away from emotional deal

Photo by Michael Campanella – UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images Celtic won’t be signing Jordan Larsson with the striker now on the verge of completing a move to Bundesliga side Schalke. The Bhoys have a couple of quality strikers in their ranks in Kyogo Furuhashi and Giorgos Giakoumakis. Add in that Daizen Maeda can play through the middle and Celtic may not need another striker – even with Albian Ajeti surely on his way out soon. Still, there have been links to striker signings and one of them could have been a hugely emotional move for all connected with Celtic. Reports in Russia last month suggested that Celtic had become the most likely destination for Jordan Larsson after leaving Spartak Moscow. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine meant players were able to leave Russian clubs, with Larsson spending time on loan at AIK in Sweden earlier this year. Now available for nothing, Celtic were linked with a deal to sign Larsson and allow him to follow in father Henrik’s footsteps at Parkhead. Sky Sports reported that Celtic wouldn’t be signing Larsson though, seemingly backing away from a deal for the striker. Celtic may not be signing Larsson but he is set to complete a move to a new club very soon. Photo by Sefa Karacan/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images Fabrizio Romano reports that Schalke have reached an agreement to sign Larsson on a free transfer. It’s stated that sporting director Rouven Schroder was key to the move, pushing to sign Larsson ahead of other clubs. Larsson will allegedly head to Germany in the next 24 hours to finalise the move with a medical and personal terms to be thrashed out. All signs point to Larsson joining Schalke and this emotional move to Celtic can be ruled out once again. Henrik was such a hero at Celtic that seeing his son turn out in the famous green and white hoops would have been great for all Bhoys fans. It just isn’t meant to be right now though, and Celtic fans will be watching Larsson’s progress in Germany very closely.
