On Friday, Robert Lewandowski, the new No. 9 for FC Barcelona, was the center of attention. The Polish striker wore his brand-new jersey at his well-attended unveiling at Camp Nou; the garment has always been associated with scoring.
The new striker for Barça is no stranger to scoring goals; while wearing the number 9 jersey for Bayern Munich the last two seasons, he won the European Golden Shoe. Lewandowski wore the infamous jersey number that carries with it the expectation of goals during eight of his seasons with Bayern, three with Borussia Dortmund, and one with Znicz Pruszkow in 2007–08.
Add one more name to the list.
The Pole adds his name to the list of FC Barcelona players who have worn number 9, with Lewandowski replacing Memphis in the position. Famous names like Luis Sánchez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Samuel Eto'o, Patrick Kluivert, and Cristiano Ronaldo are just a few of the finest players that have come before him in recent years.
Johan Cruyff, the greatest legend of them all, was another well-known blaugrana number 9 further back in Barça history. The Dutchman followed in the footsteps of great strikers like César Rodriguez, Josep Escolà, and Josep Samitier. It is now Robert Lewandowski's turn to assume the reins.
