Okudzeto Ablakwa warns the EC not to play with fire.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has warned the Electoral Commission against making decisions that will disenfranchise Ghanaians in the 2024 elections.

The EC presented to Parliament last month a draft CI titled Public Elections (Registration of Voters) Regulations, 2021, which is expected to govern continuous voter registration.

The EC is seeking to make the Ghana Card the sole form of identification for eligible voters who want to be added to the electoral roll under the new C.I, which would become law after 21 sitting days of Parliament.

The EC also claimed that the decision was made at an IPAC meeting attended by representatives from all political parties, including the opposition NDC.

However, after it was revealed that the NDC was not invited to that meeting, Mr. Ablakwa stated on Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana that there was a grand agenda to rig the 2024 elections in favor of the NPP.

"There is a clear plan to rig [the elections], but the EC must be warned in no uncertain terms that they are playing with fire."

Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, a former EC Chairman, has also criticized the EC's decision to use the Ghana Card as the only source document for continuous voter registration.

He told Graphic Online exclusively that, with many Ghanaians struggling to obtain their Ghana Cards, making it the only form of identification for voter registration was contrary to electoral inclusivity, fairness, and justice.

"Ghanaian citizens who are 18 years or older but do not have the Ghana Card do not lose their citizenship." So the moot question is, "Why make the Ghana Card the only means of identification for purposes of establishing eligibility to vote?" Dr Afari-Gyan asked.
