Suspect cable thief electrocuted at ECG substation in Kumasi.

A young man was killed while attempting to steal cables from an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) substation in Kumasi.

The suspect was discovered lying with severe burns when power distribution officials were notified of the incident around 1 a.m. on Friday (August 5). At the scene, he was pronounced dead.

His accomplice however bolted upon sensing danger. The situation led to unstable power in some Kumasi suburbs.

"It occurred around 1 a.m. These two suspects broke into our station in an attempt to steal our cables, and one of them was electrocuted and a blast occurred. "We reported the matter to the police [who came to transport the body to the morgue]," Grace Garshong, spokesperson for the ECG in the Ashanti Region, told dailymailgh.com.

She is urging the public to refrain from such acts, which have a negative impact on customer service.

"This is sufficient evidence that if you tamper with our equipment, you may lose your life or be maimed." This one, for example, had a negative impact on some consumers. Our engineers had to work tirelessly to restore power, so the situation is concerning."

Mr. Joseph Kwadwo Ofori, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Akan Constituency, believes that using the Ghana Card as the sole form of identification for voter registration is unnecessary.

He claimed that because obtaining the Ghana Card is difficult and its coverage is limited, relying on it would disenfranchise potential voters.

He claimed that the exercise would be a waste of the country's limited resources, pointing out that the Electoral Commission (EC) had just completed a new Voters' Register in 2020.

Mr Ofori was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kadjebi, Oti Region, in response to the EC's announcement that the Ghana Card would be the sole identification material for Voter Registration.

The former legislator advised the EC to abandon the idea because it would plunge the country into civil war due to opposition parties' vehement opposition.

Mr Ofori requested that the EC allow anyone over the age of 18 to register for any Ghanaian identity card without restriction.
