Ghanaian passengers file a complaint against Delta Airlines for a 'chaotic' flight on July 25.
An official complaint has been lodged against Delta AirLines for their "unprofessional" handling of a flight from New York to Accra in late July 2022.
The complaint, dated Monday, August 8, 2022, was filed through their lawyer by seven passengers on the said flight.
It was submitted to the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection, which is part of the Department of Transportation in the United States.
The regulator has been asked, among other things, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the earlier postponement of the said flight and how passengers were mistreated during the process.
According to Sammy Gyamfi, National Democratic Congress, NDC, National Communications officer, who was on the flight, there was rescheduling chaos, which resulted in the July 24 flight being moved to July 25.
Then, on July 25, two hours into the flight from John F. Kennedy Airport to Kotoka International Airport, KIA, passengers had to endure a terrifying experience when the plane was forced to return to JFK Airport in an emergency landing due to a lack of fuel.
According to other reports, people with business class tickets were subsequently assigned economy seats on other flights, while others waited until the 26th to return to Accra.
According to information available to GhanaWeb, the petitioners - five Ghanaians and two Ghanaian-born Americans - are seeking sanctions against the airline as well as relief, including refunds.
"Our clients hold the view that the events of the scheduled flight of Sunday, 24th July 2022 and rescheduled flight of Monday, 25th July 2022 resulting in flight delays and rescheduling, bad passenger service, unsafe aircraft operating practice (fuel shortage), and discrimination as outlined above are matters your office is clothed with authority to investigate and sanction," wrote the group's lawyer, Richard Nunekpeku.
"This is critical in order to prevent similar future occurrences and promote safe air travel for all."
The petitioners are also seeking compensation for the incident's psychological trauma.
"...and to further order Delta Air Lines Inc. to pay appropriate compensation to all affected passengers for the psychological trauma and loss of time they suffered as a result of the events enumerated above on Saturday, July 24th, 2022 and Monday, July 25th, 2022," the complaint continued.
The complaint was copied to the Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the CEO of Delta Air Lines Inc. The airline has yet to respond officially to the news.
