Following Barcelona's treatment, Frenkie De Jong understands that he is now prepared to accept Manchester United's offer
Following his treatment by FC Barcelona in recent weeks, Frenkie de Jong has acknowledged that he might be prepared to join Manchester United.
The two clubs reached a €85 million ($87 million) transfer agreement for the 25-year-old in July, but De Jong declined to change teams, citing the absence of Champions League play at United and his desire to flourish at Camp Nou under Xavi Hernandez as his main reasons.
However, it has also been claimed elsewhere that a disagreement about deferred compensation was another factor contributing to De Jong's stance, and it appears that the Dutchman was sufficiently incensed by Barca's actions to finally make a decision with a move to Old Trafford.
De Jong is scheduled to make €18 million ($18.4 million) next season and then €88.58 million ($90.2 million) over the final four years of his deal, which expires in mid-2026, after agreeing to a contract extension and pay deferral in October 2020.
However, it was made public on Monday how Barca had notified De Jong and his team that the agreement made under the supervision of the current president Joan Laporta's predecessor Josep Bartomeu had reportedly produced proof of illegal behavior, opening everyone concerned to legal action.
Along with three other players who have signed identical contracts, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Gerard Pique, and Clement Lenglet, Barca wants the current contract to be nullified and De Jong to revert to their prior agreements.
A family source who spoke to Mundo Deportivo this week claimed that De Jong has "o.oo%" intention of accepting the 50% pay cut that Laporta wants him to take in order to stay, and with fans verbally abusing him outside Barca's training facility on Wednesday, tensions between the two parties are at an all-time high.
The same newspaper reported that De Jong thinks Barca is smearing him in the media. In addition, rival daily SPORT claims that on Saturday, De Jong finally told his teammates in the locker room that he might indeed join United.
De Jong is reportedly "extremely angry" and "more open to change" than before, and is also "very angry" with Barca who he thinks are pressuring him to leave.
