The various phases of the Ghana cedi notes over the years.

Ghana first used cedi notes and pesewa coins to replace Ghana pounds, shillings, and pence on July 19, 1965.

Ghana pounds, shillings, and pence were the official currency under British colonial rule.

Prior to this, the West African Currency Board was established and used primarily for trading purposes across the sub-region from the early 1940s to 1954.

Wonder Ami Hagan, host of People & Places on GhanaWeb TV, was granted access to the newly refurbished Ghana National Museum, which housed specimens of currency notes dating from the colonial period to the present.

"During independence, Ghana had its own currency, which is the cedi coming into play, and over the years, the currency has changed its phases until July 1, 2007, when the last currency was redenominated and changed," a museum guide explained.

Meanwhile, following independence in 1957, Ghana decided to formally exit the British Colonial Monetary System and adopt the widely accepted decimal system.

At the time, the newly issued cedi notes and pesewa coins were worth eight shillings and four pence (8s 4p) and featured a portrait of the country's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The name 'cedi', on the other hand, was derived from the Akan word'sedie', which means cowrie - a shell form of currency that gained popularity and wider circulation in the late nineteenth century.

The 'pesewa' on the hand represented the gold-dust currency regime's smallest denomination, and its name was chosen to replace the British Colonial penny.

Renowned broadcaster Kwesi Kyei Darkwa, also known as KKD, has taught Ghanaians the meaning of loyalty.

According to the master communicator's learnings, particularly from his mother, loyalty should not be to humans.

Rather, loyalty should be to people's principles.

He claims that if principles are relegated by loved ones, it is easier to withdraw.

"My mother taught me that you won't be loyal to a human being, which I thought was impolite because you're loyal to my father, but she says no, I'm loyal to values, and your father has those values, which is why I'm loyal to him." You cannot therefore be loyal to a thief, a plunderer, or a liar. "Be loyal to truth, kindness, good leadership, and providence so that when the people you love abandon those values, you can reclaim your loyalty," he said.

This was revealed by KKD, as he is affectionately known, during an interview on Ghana Television.

If loyalty is based on personalities, he says, "we will be loyal to people in authority who are the worst thieves in our society, and that will not bode well for the prosperity of this country."
